Tractor History

At first glance, the International Harvester logo plastered on a sign on State Road 44 pointing to a nearby museum is just a black-colored 'H' with a giant red dotted 'i' in the middle.

To farmers and anyone well familiar with the tractor model, they know the 'H' symbolizes the back of the wheels and axle of a tractor. And the lower part of the 'i,' the body of the tractor; and the dot of the 'i,' the driver's head.

Evolution of farming at HHD

The old-timers were hard at work plowing and picking on Tuesday at Husker Harvest Days.

At one of the largest farm shows in the world, with the latest technology in farm equipment, these old-timers were busy showing why their equipment was the talk of the farm community back in the day.

For example, Marcellus Wall of Aurora had his 1936 McCormick-Deering diesel tractor out working the fields on Tuesday, the opening day of the show.

A Farmer and his Tractor -- Farmall M brings back fond memories

A local veteran was treated to a blast from his past last Friday.
Milo Mundorff, 94, a resident of Illinois Veterans Home at La Salle, grew up farming near Sterling. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, flying C-47s. When his time in the service ended, he returned to his family’s 76-acre farm.
“I went back to farming and later I was a rural mail carrier,” Mundorff said.

This tractor was bought by Courtney in 2005 at an auction, making him the third owner.

Farmall H -- The Purple Cancer Eater

A purple cow - maybe. But a brightly gleaming full-size purple vintage farm tractor? Never until Sunday.

“I saw it out there, and I thought, ‘Boy, that must have been some party,’” Orion Samuelson, longtime WGN farm radio personality, said of the 64-year-old International H tractor, resplendent in its magnificent coat of deep purple enamel, at the 10th annual Heritage Tractor Adventure at the Grundy County Fairgrounds.
