6V to 12V

Postby gjpgonzo » Tue Feb 21, 2017 6:40 pm

I have a 1952 McCormic Farmall Cub. Does anyone know of a complete kit for converting from 6v to 12v?

I have seen a number of 6 to 12V conversions kits offered on the internet.

Having converted all my tractors to 12V, much cheaper to do it yourself.

Spend some time searching this site for the 12V conversion. The brackets for mounting the Delco alternator on a Cub are not difficult to make or you can purchase them from an individual on this site. The rest of the parts needed for the conversion can be purchased from your local auto parts store.

The Delco clone single wire alternator is the easiest to wire up. Some alternators require 3 wires.

I have one tractor with a 20 plus year old 3 wire Delco alternator. Haven't diagnosed the current charging problem. If the problem is the alternator, will exchange it for a single wire. Cost plus the core alternator, $30- to $40-.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Besides the alternator what other parts do I need. That is why I was looking for a full kit.

Depends own which alternator your start with.

Basically you will need the alternator, brackets, amp meter, battery, light bulbs, and a ballast resister or new coil with internal resistor.

Again, depends on which alternator. You may need some additional electrical wire, and a diode if you choose the 3 wire alternators. You may need a new belt, may be not. I swapped the pulley from the generator to the alternator.

Again, search this site. There are discussions on 3 wire alternators, Delco and Hitachi, single wire alternators.

I put a single wire Delco clone on my standard Cub. Made the brackets for the alternator.

Here's a link to a true one wire alternator, won't drain your battery.

I agree with Eugene, cheaper to do it your self than to buy a kit.

Someone on this site makes and sells the brackets for the Delco alternator.

Place an ad in "The Vine" for the brackets.

If you have some metal working ability, you can make the brackets. I used scrap flat bar stock. Took me two tries to get it right. Total out of pocket expense, less than $1- for welding rod and electricity.

Here is a sketch I made of the last one I made for the base, forgive all the scribble as I was in a hurry. Found another of the finished product.

This is the only one I can find of the alternator installed. Yours doesn't have to be this complicated, I am a machinist and have free use of all tools here.

Ok I am clueless here. I have looked everywhere on this site for information. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but all I am looking for is a complete conversion kit. Bulbs alt harness brackets ... everything. Can someone please help me find one?

You might not find everything in one package. Easier and less expensive to buy the individual pieces that you need and put it all together, Brillman's makes a harness-(tell them what you want), bulbs & alternator at your local parts store, brackets can be made or purchased on the VINE forum, etc.

Folks selling 'kits' typically sell them for almost double what you can get individually
