54a grader rubbing

Postby Drfting1 » Sun Feb 26, 2017 3:24 pm

Hi, have a question on the 54a blade setup, just finished up on restoring the cub and grader setup, after installing it and operating it, I noticed that it rubs against the steering housing... did I install it wrong or maybe missing something?.... Thanks Bill

there should be a metal bushing where the bolt goes through the arm that is probably missing and allowing the arm to flop around a little.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I had to add another washer in mine to space it out so it didn't rub on mine too...

Mine rubs with the bushing and washers installed.
I just keep the spray can handy when I take the blade off.

Mine was rubbing too even with the bushing.
Problem was that it was wallered out allowing the arm to cock to the left and rub. I welded it up tightening up the pivot hole. Problem solved.

Thank you everyone for responding, I played around with it this morning, I added some washers in a few of places and tightened (still moves freely) right up, no more twisting while lifting, I checked the bushing and everything seemed ok, I'm going to replace the only bolt I didn't replace, the long hanger bolt, threads looked a little flatten out, but not enough to cause it to twist as much as it had, I'll order a new one anyway from TM next time I do an order from them.... Thanks again Bill

oh while I'm on this area of the tractor, one quick question, I have to drill and tap where the two screws mount the radiator side panel to the tractor, the originals were broken off, should I be careful of my depth, I noticed the screws on the other side were really short ..... thanks Bill

I'd suggest marking the drill bit with some tape to show the depth you want. I have found that there is about 1/4" +/- between the end of the screw and the bottom of the hole. You'll probably feel the drill bit drop through into the void and can stop at that point. You may need a drill bit extension or extra long drill bits (aircraft bits) on that side.

YES! Be very careful and don't go too deep or you will have a stream of anti-freeze. Not sire of the depth. Others will chime in and tell you exactly. I know that Bob McCarty has experience with these holes.

I second what Bighoss said about being careful on depth.

I had a helper dill out a broken screw there and she got the end of the drill bit caught on the inside edge of the water jacket and broke off the tip of the bit.

To compound that, she didn't mention it and then broke off the end of the tap.

Stuff happens

Bobs tape tip works well (and is fast), but I've seen drill bits pull past the tape before you can react fast enough...
I like to make or find a bushing that only allows the drill bit to stick out the depth of the hole you want, especially for holes like in this situation.
Wooden dowels work well, small tubing, etc.- anything that makes it a physical stop will work. Back off or choke up on the bit in the chuck to adjust the depth after you cut it close to length.

Good luck-
