One would think that if the IH engineers needed to skimp on cast iron, they could have found a better place to cut than this:
Anybody have success keeping their boot on? Sure would be a lot easier if it had another quarter inch to work with?
Maybe I have the wrong boot?

Re: Touch Control Boot
Hi,
I don't know what the block part number is on yours, it looks like maybe it is made for use without a boot. Did it have a boot before, I think maybe the newest Touch Controls had no boot on the piston.
Boss Hog, or someone with a newer Cub would probably know.

Re: Touch Control Boot
The boot needs to first be secured with safety wire (thin stainless steel wire) wrapped around the boot over the base where the ridge in the block is, twisting the ends together until tight. Then you extend the piston forward to its full reach, and wrap a piece of safety wire around that narrow end of the boot, twisting the two ends of wire until they are tight. The narrow end then moves with the piston and keeps the dirt out.
Hope that makes sense!!

Re: Touch Control Boot
I see what Glen is talking about...yours doesn't have a lip.
The new rubber boots that Steiner and TM sell are supposed to go slightly INSIDE the piston sheath/cylinder. Seems like it would let dirt in to me.

No Lip...that is the problem I am having. Cant keep the wire on the tiny, tiny, tiny ledge.
I had one of those rubber boots. I was not smart enough to figure it out so I ended up cutting it up and using it as grommets. Worked great on the battery box.

Re: Touch Control Boot
Glen, It did have a leather boot on it when I purchased it. Dried up and ugly! It was hanging loosely around on the shaft, not really doing anything to protect the unit. Maybe the previous owner put it on, like I am trying to do now.
I purchased the rubber one shown above and stretched it over the knuckle. I agree with Dale, It did not look right. Just kinda floating around not sealing anything in or out. I removed it and ordered the leather one, assuming it was the correct one.

Well, the link Dale provided to that boot matches your part number, according to the TM information. I, too, am curious what is supposed to hold that boot in place. I have a '77 in need of a TC rebuild, and the boot just rides around on the end of the shaft, leaving the polished base of the shaft exposed to all manner of detritus. Clearly that can't be right, but I haven't had a chance to dig into it.

Re: Touch Control Boot
you are using the wrong boot, it uses part #364833r1 that fits inside of the piston on the front covering the clevis, the piston is not covered

Re: Touch Control Boot
Like Tim said, the rubber boot rides only on the shaft INSIDE the piston cylinder, which, in my opinion, does nothing.
Maybe you can make a bead around the casting edge with JB Weld or JB Quick, then use the leather boot?

Re: Touch Control Boot
You must have ESP.
Since the leather boot is on, and I don't want to remove it, and I don't have the correct one, and if I did, WE don't feel like it performs well, So WE are going to try this and see how long it lasts.
I will update as soon as I notice it has come off.

Re: Touch Control Boot
I assume you did not glue the forward/narrow end? It needs to slide a bit, or at least be secured with the piston all the way out/forward, or else it will yank the rear off.
Hope that does it!

Re: Touch Control Boot
I just glued the back end. It seems to be stuck pretty good...for now. The front end is loose.
Now knowing that I purchased the wrong boot, I owe the IH engineers an apology. My apologies!
At least I will have a peace of mind knowing the hydraulic system is being better protected than before...until the glue lets go, of course.
Anybody care to take a guess as to how long the boot stays on?
fyi. I did not scuff the paint where the glue was applied.
