Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
New to the forum here, and I have a question. I just recently changed the oil in my '53 Cub for the first time and all was well until I went to install the replacement filter that I had bought from Steiner. It was too small! Too small for the housing and the through-bolt would not fit through the center of the filter. It wasn't until I looked at the filter part numbers on the housing did I realize that this Cub apparently uses the same filter as the A, C, H; plus the Supers. Steiner says they sell boatloads of Cub filters with only one other returned for incorrect size. I can't find any documentation that addresses this. Easy enough to accommodate but still a head-scratcher. Anyone ever see this before?

That is why I try to avoid Steiner when I can.

Well, maybe, but looking up the Cub part number in the book and they sent me what is supposed to be the right unit. Not their fault as far as I can see. Again, not a big deal, just curious if I'm reading something wrong.

Your local TSC or auto parts that sell Fram filters should be able to get what you need C235.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over.

Re: Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
I would suspect that somebody put the wrong sticker on the housing.
The housing is cast as part of the block, pretty tough to mess that up or change it with something different.
The bolt only goes through the filter one way and it's a snug fit.
The filter doesn't completely fill the housing there is some space between the filter and the inside of the housing.
My bet is you had the correct filter and just weren't familiar with the previous two items and the wrong sticker reinforced what you were experiencing.

What is the number of the filter they sent you?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
Hi,
I think the sticker on the oil filter housing is for another model of tractor, not a Cub.
The holes on the ends of Cub oil filters are different sizes, and the filter goes on the bolt one way.
Here is a listing at TM Tractor showing the size of oil filter a Cub uses, and how it goes on the long bolt. There are Case IH part numbers of the filters there.

Re: Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
I'd hit a reputable dealer where you can do a visual on the replacement. Maybe even bring your bolt.
I called my dealer sales guy after bringing a filter home ( from quite a distance) for my first oil change on my cub because the filter was taller and narrower than the dirty one when I pulled it and told him it was the wrong filter.
The old filter barely fit the housing width and had no flange for the bolt.
He was right ,the dirty filter was the wrong one though he was being polite and did not say so. Just said to bring them both in as he was familiar with cub filters and the number was right.
I figured it out and called him back after the oil change to let him know......sheesh.
Your filter housing sticker may not be original , like some one put the wrong one on long after production too.
Light switch stickers are an example of Cub stickers than can get messed up.
A Farmall A looks Cubbish from a distance ,maybe some stickers did too for a previous owner.

Re: Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
Good suggestions, all.
The decal on the housing is certainly not original as the tractor was recently repainted and had all the decals replaced. The light switch decal, for example, is definitely incorrect as it is for a four-position switch and I have a 3-position (off, dim, not-so-dim). So, yes, this could lead me astray.
The filter sent to me is a Wix 51153, which is what everything says is for a Cub, but it is smaller diameter and length than the unit I pulled from the housing. The through-bolt will not fit through either end of the new filter (that was my first clue something was wrong). Not even close to fitting through.
My next step is to remove the old filter (I had to put it back in so I could use the tractor) and measure it via caliper, but the size difference between the Cub filter and the old filter cited on the Steiner web site seems to be about right. So the size and part no. on the housing would appear to agree. Certainly I'll take it with me (and the bolt) should I go to buy one locally, which is probably the wise thing to do now.
To their credit, Steiner was very accommodating; they did refund me the full price of the filter and they knocked off the shipping cost on a follow-up order a few weeks later. Even though they did no wrong.
I agree that this would be hard to goof something like this at the factory, but as of today I am puzzled.
If we get a rainy day this weekend maybe I'll drain the housing, pull the filter, and take a picture of the two units side-by-side.

Both local auto parts stores have Cub oil filters and tune up parts in stock.khutchins wrote:Your local TSC or auto parts that sell Fram filters should be able to get what you need C235.
New Holland dealerships handle IH parts. Haven't tried Case dealerships, they probably handle IH parts. Case, IH, and New Holland, are owned by one company.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
Thanks, Eugene. I did not know New Holland was part of the family now. The local auto parts store is probably my best bet, but that'll have to wait until I next go to town. With the old filter...

Don't overlook the possibility you could have the wrong bolt also. No telling what somebody has stuck in there in the last sixty plus years.

Could be...
Seemed to fit the housing cap well enough. A closer look upon disassembly is warranted, though. Good thought.

I look up the price, plus shipping/handling, on line for the needed part. Take the IH part number and internet price to the local suppliers.
If the part is expensive, price it at the local suppliers. There is, sometimes a significant difference in prices.
Normally, I find the local, in store prices match or beat the internet prices. Service, item not in stock, be here at 10 AM tomorrow.

Re: Farmall A oil filter on a Cub?
NAPA has the filter...I think it's 5113. And as has been said, it only fits ONE direction, and even then it is VERY tight to get the bolt started through the hole. I actually thought I might have gotten the wrong one last week when I replaced one, but it finally did go on.
Good luck!
Good luck!
