Reinstalling the clutch

Postby jsfarmall » Wed Dec 13, 2017 8:59 am

How do I get the clutch assembly back on right without an alignment tool? Doing a rebuild and changing the crank.

Broom stick. Sand it down until it fits, that will get you in the ballpark. Or a steel rod that fits in the pilot bushing with electrical tape wrapped around it to fit the clutch disc. If you installed a new pilot bushing make sure your input shaft fits before putting the tractor back together. Nothing more aggravating than having to take it back apart because the shaft is stuck in the bushing or it won't fit while trying to put it back together. Those bushings collapse when put in and get tight.

It's too bad that harbor freight doesn't sell their universal clutch alignment tool anymore. It didn't cost much and is a handy tool to have.

Glad the pilot bushing was mentioned! The replacement crank doesn't have one in it. May be worth looking into a tool.

Actually, Val, yours is the better tool. It can also be used to check the fit of the pilot bushing. The plastic ones are a bit undersize and will slip right in, even if the bushing is too tight. Don't throw those old input shafts away!
