Running with no hydraulics
I need to rebuild the hydraulics but I also need to use tractor to pull some old logs. Can I remove the hydraulic box, leave the pump hooked up and still use the tractor? Not received my rebuild kit yet but wanted to get started on the removal and clean up, but I need to use the tractor too.

No. Pump needs fluid in it. Take the pump off and make a blocker plate in its place, like what a Cub has with no hydraulics. Here’s what they look like. You can make one that’s close. http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/735fp.htm

Guess that I will need to order pump gaskets now. Seems it may be better to wait until I get these logs moved and the tractor can set for a day or two.

Block off plate can be plywood since it's only temporary. The plywood will work as its own gasket with some permatex smeared on the gasket surface. It only has to stop some splash lube, nothing under pressure.

Good to know. That makes it very easy. Thanks.

So far, Paul and Ringo have arrived. John and George were supposed to follow ages ago, but apparently have gone awol. Long story. - Circle of Safety: Y

Don’t be afraid of a pump rebuild, either. It’s not that bad. I think the hardest part was getting the thing off the tractor in the first place. And that would have been a lot easier if I had known that you only have to remove 2 of the 4 bolts to get it off the tractor (upper left and lower right, looking forward at the back of the pump, if memory serves).
Other than that, just keep things clean, pay attention to the order that things come out so they go in the same way, and make sure to preserve and reuse the washer with the bent tab to keep the nut from loosing in the future. And use some hydraulic fluid as assembly lube.
Maybe 2-3 hours on your first one? I put it off for a long time, too. When I finally did it, though, it wasn’t a bad job at all.

I will have to remember that! I'm hoping to start back on my white demo Super A, and I want to get the engine running good before I put the hydraulics back on it. I don't have a block-off plate for the pump so that will save me a lot of time looking for or making something.
