12 volt/ 6 volt

I just bought a 63 cub. It has a 12v battery and alternator, and a 6v starter. Do I want to change it all back to 6v or leave it how it is? Is there a 12v starter?

It will last a good while like it is. Ours is the same way. If it cranks farely quick it won’t hurt it.

Welsome to the FORUM. There are many cubs (and others) that have been converted to 12v and still use the 6v starter. IMO the only issue you will run into is if you stay on the starter for a long period trying to start the engine. It will probably heat up and COULD damage the starter so the choice is yours. 12v starters are available and were std on later model cubs (and others) as well. You might run into some problems fitting a 12v starter in place of the 6v starter. IH made some changes to the block casting to accomodate the 12v starter.

Hi,
The factory 12 volt Cubs had a starter that did not use the switch on top of the starter, and the rod that you pull.
They have different battery cables than a 6 volt starter, and a switch on the dash that turns the starter on or off. Some had a push button, and some had a key switch, depending on the year of the Cub.
The 12 volt starter is a bigger diameter than the 6 volt starter, so like was said above, IH changed the block and the lower water elbow so it would fit.

Mine has a 12 volt conversion but still uses the original 6 volt starter. I just don't let it spin for more than a few seconds at a time so it don't fry on me. But as fast as it spins, the engine starts pretty quickly.

If you ever need to, most repair parts are available at you local auto pasts store. If the starter needs major repairs, there should be a shop in the area that can repair the starter.

There use to be a guy on this board, log on name Deputy Jailer, who sold parts for and repaired starters and generator.

Back when I first started turning wrenches, kits for starters and generators containing brushes, bearings and bushings were readily available at most local parts stores. I installed lots of them for others and myself. I haven't seen a kit since the early 80s. Most these days would rather replace than refurbish.

My '48 Cub was converted to 12VDC. The larger starter barely fit with no grinding. But, you will have to rotate the starter rod 180 degrees to physical fit on the new starter.
