Was this supposed to happen
Was working on my Governor. I thought only the outside housing would come off. It looks like the entire Governor came off with the gear. Was this supposed to happen and if not how bad have I screwed up?

Re: Was this supposed to happen
That IS what happens. The main problem you may have is that the timing mark to align it for reinstallation, is on the REAR side of the drive gear. You may have to pull the distributor to see it, then make a mark on the front (I actually used a punch and made the dot on the front face).
And under that "while you have it off...you might want to replace the distributor seal.
Here is an earlier post, and down toward the bottom is Glen's post about the timing mark and how to find it.

Re: Was this supposed to happen
The gear on the governor has slots which means it can only go 2 ways on the end of the distributor. As long as the distributor nor the motor are turned, the timing will remain the same. Or am I over thinking it?

Or could it be installed 180 degrees off?

You are correct. If you are careful and have a little luck, you can slide the governor back in and still be in time. Be aware that the angle of the teeth means the governor has to rotate as it slides into place. Allow for that while installing it. You can do this without the governor housing and install the housing as a later step.
If you aren't so lucky, you will get into what Dale described.
Edit: Yes you can get it in 180 degrees off but it won't have any effect and no one will know until some later date.

Re: Was this supposed to happen
Well my luck tends to lean away from the good. I am not familiar with the governor stuff, all new to me, and I pulled it without checking forum or I would have known about TDC. Worst case scenario is I have to pull if back out and start over.

Got governor apart and on top of the governor thrust ball bearing sat a washer that was very worn out. Cant find a picture anywhere that shows a washer should have ever been there. Maybe put there to take up slack? Just a guess. I will post a pic and soon as I figure this tablet out.

Re: Was this supposed to happen
Part #23 is a 3-part bearing assembly:

Not sure if you are showing all 3 parts?

Sorry I did not remove the third part for the picture. All 3 parts of the thrust bearing are there. The washer shown is an extra that was on top of those.

Re: Was this supposed to happen
Here are better pictures after the clean up. One picture is what it should have looked like, one if the three piece bearing, one of the three piece bearing and the extra washer and a pic of how I found it when i took it apart with washer on top. Need to put it back together and not sure why the washer would have been put there.

that big washer is not suppose to be there, check for damage, perhaps some one thought they needed to shim it or who knows?

Re: Was this supposed to happen
Check the holes where the pin secures the weights to the assembly. Those pin holes can wear and provide inconsistent sticking or moving of the weights (ie. they won't move in and out smoothly or quickly). I think the fix for that is to get someone to re-drill the holes

Which seal is this exactly and how signifigant is it to be replaced if leaky. I remember pulling an ignition distributor once and a palm sized handful of motor oil poured out from the governor side at the bottom where the distributor was mounted. Is this related or is that normal?
