beware of tractor supply carb kits

Postby butchs38 » Tue Apr 03, 2018 4:59 am

bought a bk18 carb kit from ts after installing gaskets needle seat and needle valve adjusting float level i put it back on and fired it up. If i adjusted fuel mixture for smooth idle it would run lean at higher rpm. After putting fitting and clear tube on bowl drain fuel level was good at idle but low at high rpm. Checked all screens, lines and tank for restrictions all good. Removed carb again opened back up and was checking things over in comparing needle valve seat with original i notice the ts seat had a much smaller hole for fuel to flow through. Reinstalled original valve and seat reset float level reinstalled card now it runs like it should.

Yeah, most folks here on the forum know not to buy that kit. Hopefully the newer guys will see your post and heed the warning

Check out this thread in the How To Forum: Carburetor Kit Comparisons

There are several other good carb threads in that How To section...

I like getting the complete carb kit from McDonald Carburetor: http://www.mcdonaldcarb.com/product_p/mr5097.htm

The idle mixture adjustment should not have much effect at high idle. You may have other problems with the carb.

Putting the clear tube on the carb on a non running engine will show the fuel level in the bowl. On a running engine it will function as a manometer and show the pressure difference between the bowl and atmospheric pressure. The atmospheric pressure will be higher than the bowl pressure when the engine is running and a greater difference at higher engine speed. The level of the gasoline in the tube should drop. The actual level in the bowl stays the same.
