Help Reading the Parts Manual

Postby w30bob » Wed Apr 25, 2018 3:19 pm

Hi Guys,

Ok, I'm a little confused (a bit more than usual) in trying to figure out what the parts manual is saying. I'm looking at the lastest rev at the IH emblem on the square nose grill. I can't post a pic of the page from work, but here's what it says;

The part number in question is #43 in the diagram of the hood/grill

There are 3 part numbers listed........I think. The first two are 2751844R1 and 2751846R1, both listed for tractors with SN 248124 and below and each listed as an option for the other. The 3rd part number listed is what confuses me. The number is 61662C1, listed for SN 248125 and above. That's a totally different part number in terms of number of digits and form. When I look online the emblems folk list for the square nose machines are either of the first two numbers, not the third 6166 2C1 number. I can't find any info on the 61662C1 number anywhere. The other two emblems look like they might be correct, but I've no idea why the two parts look identical but have different PNs......unless the vendors are listing one of them wrong. So what is the parts manual trying to tell me here that I'm not getting? Is 61662C1 the real part number or is it some sort of revision on the previous number. There's also nothing noting one PN superseding the other.........so HELP!

thanks,
bob

Can't answer the questions about the emblem (graphic) #43 but SN 248125 is the first "NEW INTERNATIONAL CUB" (Longstripe). You probably already knew that.

It can be confusing can't it? I took a look on page 2-1 and it didn't seem to help me any. Here is what I can sift out of it:

1) The original part number was 2 751 846 R1. It is the only number for that part listed in the 1963 revision of the catalog (when square nose Cubs first came out).
2) Hardware listed for 2 751 846 R1 is a pair or thread-cutting screws, which hints strongly the emblem is plastic.
3) Optional part 2 751 844 R1 has machine threaded hardware, implying a metal emblem.
4) TM has 2 751 846 R1, an original part made of plastic. That seems to confirm #1, except CaseIH sometimes supplies will-fit for original parts.
5) CC Specialties has replacements for both 2 751 846 R1and 2 751 844 R1. Their listings confirm plastic/metal differences. Their picture shows 2 751 844 R1 with exposed chrome around the outside, where the plastic one is white plastic at the outside.

All the above together indicates the square nose Cubs initially came out with 2 751 846 R1, made of plastic. A metal version with some exposed chrome may have been a running change or an alternate supply that was used based on availability from 2 different suppliers. (Availability/supplier situations often show up in the catalogs as 2 different part numbers and "optional".) If it had been a running change, the newer part would have normally been the one to survive as a replacement.

Continuing:
6) Part 61 662 C1 shows up for the long stripe Cubs in TC-37F. They must have changed something, maybe a slight shape or color change.
7) If you go online to CaseIH and look for it, it substitutes to 2 751 846 R1. So the newer part went away and the original from 1963 became the replacement.

I don't know how the long stripe emblem differed. I looked at my '66 and '79 and didn't see anything. Both are white around the outside, so I presume plastic. Not knowing the full history of either tractor, I can't verify both are original. Looking at the picture of gitractorman's '77, it appears to be the same too.

Gitractorman has been around quite a few of the later Cubs (and Cub Cadets that may have used the same emblem) and maybe he can shed some more light on 61 662 C1.

Clear now?

If this is for your 59 you may want to look in the older parts manuals. The manauls changed over time. I have found things in the older manuals that were not in the newer ones or I just was not able to find them in the newer ones.

I have 4-5 long stripes, and quite a few of the other square nose Cubs. I've only seen the plastic ones used with the self tapping screws for the hardware. This is also true from what I have seen on the mid-1963 and up Farmall 140 tractors (at sheetmetal change).

Hi Al....thanks. I noticed that there are two versions of what folks are calling 2751846R1 that are being made as repops. They look almost identical, but the spacing between the body of the "i" and the square dot on top of the eye are different. One has a pretty large space between the two and the other has them pretty close together. Both are made of plastic and use 4 mounting screws. Will keep digging to find out what the 61 662 C1 emblem is all about.

thanks,
bob

Just a note. The ones I have seen might have 4 mounting screw holes in them, but on the actual tractor (cub and 140) they only use the 2 vertical holes. THe other 2 aren't used. Probably just making a universal part is all.

Here's the grill/emblem on my early '76. I believe it it original to the tractor.
