Although I happen to like the smell of burnt gas and oil.

Hmmmm...........ok. I get the mower belt, but I've never seen an advertisement for a Cub towing people behind it. Call me cynical, but me thinks there's another reason for the strange tailpipe......but I certainly could be wrong. And the reason I say that is because the tail pipe is still open in the back, which is where most of the exhaust will exit. So if they wanted to stop the exhaust from hitting the mower belt or from folks behind the tractor getting blasted by it........they would have just pointed the tail pipe down with a 45 or 90 degree exit. Something is amiss here.

regards,
bob

Take a look at the pictures of the muffler we are talking about (the last picture is particularly instructive): http://www.tmtractor.com/new/ae/827fp.htm The bend in the pipe effectively closes off the end of the pipe. Thus the vast majority of the exhaust gas exits down, not at a 45 degree angle, but nevertheless, down. And yes the end of the pipe is open but virtually no exhaust exits there.

And no, nothing is amiss here.

Seems quicker, thus less labor and cheaper to produce, to slit and smash instead of putting a bend in it, or adding an elbow. Plus it's down under the tractor where it's not so visible for athstetics.

Well......look at that! I didn't realize the notch closes off the rear exit. What a wacky way to change the flow direction! I wonder if they patented that?

Regards,
Bob
