Ideas to stop steering wheel black Hands

Postby inairam » Fri May 11, 2018 8:02 pm

Has anyone successfully tried a sealer or some other product to seal the bakelite on what is otherwise a serviceable steering wheel to stop the black dust getting on your hands?

I am hoping for some answers that do not include buy gloves!

I pulled my wheel off and sprayed it with satin black paint. It's lasted for years and looks good too!!

There are a couple of ideas in the how to forum.
It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

I used spray-on truck bed liner from an auto parts store several years back. It has held up very well. I first filled the cracks with JB Weld and sanded them smooth.

Just clean your steering wheel with hand cleaner, such as Fast Orange or Go Jo. All that dead outer layer will come off and you'll have a nice wheel again.

I cleaned mine up real good and then sprayed it with a couple coats of Rustolium clear coat....that was about three years ago and it has held up real well. Nice thing was that I didn't even have to take the wheel off the tractor!
My tractors are stored in the shed...so don't know what the elements (sunshine) would do to the finish....dave

Thanks. I think I am going to try cleaning with a pumice cleaner first.

Great idea Gary. Low risk and I have to clean it anyway If I decide to do the other ideas.

Somethings the solutions I like the most on this forum are the simple ones for the small problems.

Thanks again farmallcub.com!

Just go to wal mart automotive section and get a steering wheel cover.

I painted mine with satin black after sanding them down to good material and patching/sanding any cracks with JB WELD. But then I actually DID get a steering wheel cover for each cub (3) because it gives good grip with a larger diameter steering wheel. More comfortable for long days of mowing my 8 acres.
