This always worked well for us:

Not on the steering wheel, on your HANDS, at the end of the day, when you're done driving the tractor. Takes the grease, grime, and steering wheel black right off your hands.

It's an old tractor, not a Rolls Royce, LOL. If you want to drive with white gloves you got in the wrong line of work :)

Dale Finch wrote:I painted mine with satin black after sanding them down to good material and patching/sanding any cracks with JB WELD. But then I actually DID get a steering wheel cover for each cub (3) because it gives good grip with a larger diameter steering wheel. More comfortable for long days of mowing my 8 acres.

I don't know, but on ours nothing really gets on your hands, at least nothing noticeable. original wheel, always stored inside. Maybe used just enough to be a smooth finish. Kind of makes me wonder if you just sanded it with something super fine, and worked it to as smooth as you can get, it might solve the problem.

Plasticizers are gone, which causes cracking from loss of mass and subsequent oxidation occurring thru sunlight and water exposure. The polymer is "unzipping" its chain and the zipper only goes in one direction...unfortunately you ain't stopping it.

Hmmmm.......I was wondering why the steering wheel on the '77 I just got had black electrical tape wrapped around an uncracked steering wheel. Never had this problem with the wheel on my '59......and still don't. Must be related to how the tractor was stored......ie, inside or outside in the elements as to how the rubber covering breaks down.

regards,
bob
