the first sickle bar

Postby Drfting1 » Sun Jun 24, 2018 4:15 pm

Got a chance to spend time today and start the restoration of the first sickle bar (have 3 and each has an issue, going to make two good ones).
Sand blasted a lot of the small parts and get them primed and painted.. Then concentrated on the knife section.
Had fun with that, first time I played with rivits like that. Clear coated all the new knives so they don't rust right away, installed them then clear coated the whole thing so rivits don't rust. Won't be a show piece, just want it to look good when done... Then I hit the play hay field behind me and scuff it all up lol :tractor:

Just plain rust-oleum satin clear in can... Keeps it looking kind of natural and preserves a little

The 7 long rivets are fun to get out aren't they?

Your going about it backwards, you have the picture of how it goes together out already. I'm pretty sure you assemble it then when something isn't right that's when you get the picture out, at least that's how I do it

Hi,
The knife bar should be straight before putting it in the cutter bar.
After hammering, and replacing knives the bar can get bent.

If you didn't look, remove it from the cutter bar, and stand it up with one end on the floor, at an angle, and look down the bottom side of it. The small bar should be straight, in all directions, the full length.
Bend it and straighten it, if it is not straight. :)

Glen your so right, I learned that when I first had it in, I couldn't get blades to move, had to work on that a few times to get it straight, also knife head caps were were rubbing in a couple places... Was a good learning experience for me
