Depends on the access to the perimeter. If it's an enclosed or bordered field (building, fence, trees, wall, etc, along one or more edges) then the first 1 or 2 cuts counter-clockwise followed by all clockwise cuts but if it's an open field with full perimeter access then all clockwise cuts will work.

Lots of how to, not much why. Left turns mean most likely you're running the tractor over standing grass to make your cut, which will be more difficult, since you have smashed the grass down. Unless you're starting in the center of the field and mowing your way out. Then again you would have had to drive over standing grass to get there and the first pass would be over standing grass.

If it's an enclosed field with no clear perimeter access you really don't have a choice, the first cut will be over standing grass.

Seems a simple concept, learned a lesson....when mowing always try to go clockwise except for the first go around to get the perimeter. Otherwise, the sickle is overcome with too much grass due to the velocity of the outer half of the bar. And yes, the first round I will be driving over standing grass.
