Why won’t my belt stay on ?
I am trying to use my woods 42 mower but I can’t keep the belt on I have a nice b142 belt and get it tight it will sit and run. But if I move the deck higght or even try to increase the throttle it will throw it right off any ideas?

Are your idler pulleys pretty much at the same height? And not too far up or down in the slots? Is belt dropping straight down from the pto pulley to the idlers?

Pretty much banjo string tight. I used to use the lift rod to walk the belt on and off. Dealer sells new pulleys for pretty reasonable. Also I found out this year that a new belt likes to jump off until it warms up even with good pulley alignment

Re: Why won’t my belt stay on ?
Well well well I put new pulleys on this dang thing got it as tight as i could it ran for about ten minutes in fairly tall grass before to threw it again y’all reckon my belt is too long? I have a b-142 belt I now see it calls for a 5/8x136 belt My belt goes down within two inches of bottoming out

Yeah, too long. But something you can try before buying another one. The mule drive has different holes for mounting the mower. Mount it in the lowest hole and see if that helps.

some of these also have a belt guide that mounts on the deck near the pulley that helps keep the belt on, is it broken off or missing, its the piece that is bent 90 degrees in the pic

Re: Why won’t my belt stay on ?
I saw that on a drawing I don’t have one.the belt is coming off the idle pulley on the right side. I’m going to get a shorter belt and try that . what length belt are you guys running books shows a 136 belt

Also check that your pulleys don,t have a sweet gum ball or piece of wood in the groove.

Re: Why won’t my belt stay on ?
On the Woods the holes don't change the belt length, just the cutting height. If you move down you also move back keeping the needed belt length the same. Otherwise you would have to have a different belt for each hole.tmays wrote:Yeah, too long. But something you can try before buying another one. As for tightness, remember that when the deck is raised the belt should have just a little slack in it. Once you lower to cutting height it will tighten up. I always adjust belt tension with the deck raised and then lower to cutting height to snug up the belt. I've never had problems with a new belt but I loosen the idlers to put a belt on. I think walking it on or rolling it over the edge of a pulley when tight could damage the belt. The belt needs to be snug, but the more tension it has the more it pulls down on the PTO pulley, which pulls up on the pilot bushing on the other end. Not an issue with the PTO engaged but it can make it harder to engage and excessively wear the pilot bushing when disengaged.
If you haven't seen them yet, there are some good pictures and explanations of proper pulley alignment in the Woods manuals in the manuals section.

Re: Why won’t my belt stay on ?
update !!!!! thanks to everyone who helped out on this. Come to find out it was the belt all along. I purchased a new b133 this morning installed it and off I went . I know its too tall and worked the snot out of my 56 but I cut close to a half acre that was tall enough that the front axle was pushing it over, Johnson grass and fescue mostly. I think i'm safe to say it will cut my yard now. thank you thank you thank you!!!!

One thing I would like to add beside the correct belt - If you work on the hub / clutch and the pulley can be off and cause the belt to come off. You need to keep you eye on the pulley as you put the clutch back together to make sure it is level.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
