6v generator charging but...

Postby Ken (48 Cub) » Tue Jul 31, 2018 10:50 am

OK, cleaned all contact points and connections. Also polarized the genny. It is now charging but my digital meter is jumping between 12 and 14 volts at the battery.

1957 International Loboy with original genny and VR. What now?

You need an analog meter, digital will give false readings.

Digital meter should be fine if checking with a good battery.

This sounds a lot like I'd expect a 12V system to act without a battery. Although maybe that'll happen with a 6V battery on a 12V charging system too.

Yeah Tim, this is the Loboy I bought from you, all still original. It is a 6v system, right?

digital meters can "bounce" with the old systems but should read closer than that, what does the battery voltage read with the engine off?

if the tag on the generator has not faded away a black back ground tag is 6 volt, a red background is 12 volt, a fully fielded regulator can give high voltage readings as well as poor grounds, test your meter on something else to verify it is working correctly

OK, I picked up analog volt meter and tested it. Reads 6.5 volts at the battery whether it's running or not...so I guess it's not charging after all. I tried to follow the troubleshooting flowchart but no luck.
