1965 Cub Touch Control Main Rockshaft Bearing Cover Zerk MISSING

Postby HIGHNOX » Tue Oct 30, 2018 4:14 am

Hello All:
Getting to know my new 1965 Cub, I was looking, and greasing, but found the left side Touch Control Rockshaft Bearing Cover with a hole, but no Zerk. and No threads. After a little research, and this fine post http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=100674. I was sure that there should be a Zerk there, so I threaded the hole, and added one. Thought someone might like the photos. The shaft was not in bad shape after 53 years with almost no grease, I do think someone did try and put some grease through that hole over the years.

Could this be a case of a pressed in zerk that maybe got lost out? Is the other side threaded? Just curious.

Hello:
Thank you all for the info, interesting, I don't get how a press in would stay in, and in this case, and as you guys said, many have fallen out.
The Left side one turns, but does not come out, so must be a press in. I will pull that other cap one day to see how a press in works.
I feel my repair is sound, and I saw no retention method for the press in, like a groove, or ? Does someone have a picture of the press in?
Due to my new found information, I changed the title of the post to Zerk Missing..
Thank you

Most press/drive in fittings have a serrated shank. Looks like threads but are not helical.

The shaft has concentric rings along it, that keep it in by friction. They probably get loose when folks try to unscrew them, flattening the rings. And they are available at many hardware stores.

BTW, the grease fitting in the PTO is also a drive in type. this is from TM Tractors:
