Why so many cast dates in 1951

Postby Barnyard » Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:07 pm

Anybody have any idea why 1951 required the letters U, V and W for cast codes?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Evidently they started with U then decided to skip past it because it was hard to distinguish from other letters. It appears they went straight from U to W. V was never intended to be used but I swear I have seen a few of them. If it was used, it was by mistake. As far a I know, including V on the lists came completely from me. If you ever see a V, get me a good picture.

Thanks Jim, I somewhat thought it was because those three letters could look similar is why they just grouped them. It makes sense. I figured you would know.

Guy Fay found an IH document on the topic (unused letters), some time before he published his Data Book. In the book, he skips over V as unused.

It is certainly possible that I misread Ws as Vs, although I don't think so in all cases.

I was just looking in the Cub database. There are only 5 U date codes. 3 are on the same tractor. The latest one is 1-10-U. The lowest W I could find was 1-11-W. There are a bunch so I could have missed something. There are no Vs.
