Re: Joined the "30 minutes and done" club yesterday
All my experimentation points to a fuel problem, and, after seeing the interior of the old one, I'm surprised it wasn't worse.
The new one looks virtually identical on the outside. I pulled off the top and set the float to Cub standards, but who knows if that is what is needed? If it was, it was set pretty low, originally. One puzzling thing is that a couple of people mentioned an "idle tube," and while the new one has a long thin tube going into the float bowl, the old one did not.
I plan on installing it this afternoon, when it gets a little warmer, so we'll see what happens.

The idle tube in your old one was probably broken off. The calibrated orifice is in the end that threads into the top of the carb. The tube that extends into the bottom is about 2" long, but may have been removed after it broke.

Re: Joined the "30 minutes and done" club yesterday
So, after fabricating a new set of studs, since the old ones don't seem to have the correct thread, I got it all installed and hooked up. It fired up immediately, settled into a smooth idle, and when I advanced or pulled back the throttle, it did what it's supposed to. I backed it out of the shed, engaged the PTO, and mowed a little bit. It didn't bog when the grass got heavy, even at half throttle.
All in all, I'm pretty happy.
Until the next thing breaks, of course!
When I'm done with lunch, I'll go out and run it for a while to see if, just possibly, a bad condenser or coil might still be a problem.

So glad the the new carb is working out for you. It's certainly a good feeling to get 'em back up and running right after they've been down. Way to go!!
Let us know how an extended workout goes.

If yours is broken as Bob described, it can probably be removed/repaired and a new idle tube (jet) installed in the top half. Search the forum for replacement information and instructions. The last one I bought was about $10. NOTE: It takes the proper tools and a generous helping of patience to get the old broken piece out of the top half.

Re: Joined the "30 minutes and done" club yesterday
Not sure I'll mess with the old carb. It looks like whoever owned it over the years only owned a large screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a hammer, and a chain to try to beat it into submission.
I spent almost 3 hours mowing on it, and no new problems arose, so I'm guessing the coil and condenser are OK...at least for a while. My distributor cap looks pretty tired, though, and I will likely need to go over that whole system eventually.
And it does smoke pretty good. The oil level isn't going down much, but it's another thing to watch.

Save the old carb. If you have the chance to attend a Cubfest, bring it along. You'd be surprised at what can be done to restore a beat up carb.

Your zip shows the Dallas area. The LA Cubfest in Bogolusa LA is well worth the trip and March 2019 is just around the corner. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=102483 The dates for the 2019 events and the calendar is being developed.

I'm actually near Whitney, TX. Well, across the lake from Whitney.
Would you be impressed to know I've been to Bogalusa many times? In fact, a city police officer threatened to throw me in jail for exceeding the 25 mph speed limit in the middle of one night, when I was lost in my truck.
There's not a Cubfest of any sort in Texas?

Bob knows what he is talking about, because he is one of a few "experts" from this forum who offers his services for free at many cubfests....OK, he may appreciate a cup of coffee or beer (depending on time of day!) as a thank you!! He has repaired several of mine at past cubfests.
IMHO (in my humble opinion), DSCF (Deep South CubFest, which is the first of the year, in Feb) would be a perfect chance for a road trip, and Bob is usually there. Lots of good forum folks, great food, and plenty of time to exchange

Burlington KS and Dewey OK. I have to agree with Dale that DSCF would be an excellent choice. Also, Longmont CO is on my "bucket list" and is hosted by Bob and Sue McCarty. Actually, all Cubfests that I have attended makes me want to make a return visit. As Dale suggested, Bob is one of the carb "guru's" and is usually at many of the Cubfests. Hope to meet you in 2019.

Where is DSCF?
We have plans to attend several T bucket events next year, so that has first call on us.

Here's the host, Mr. E's website: http://www.dscubfest.com/ You can view past activities and some other info about the area. Great winter getaway, some of the attendees from the northern states make it an extended trip/vacation. Mr. E will respond to any questions that you have, just send him a PM.
