Re: Found a new one for the family
Thank you and I’m guessing there’s a beauty under all that dirt. I plan to get to it when it warms up above freezing later this morning.
Right now I just finished feeding the woodstove and now working on my first cup of coffee.
Glancing out the window at the Cub I want it to warm up out there damn it!

Re: Found a new one for the family
Been a busy week but I did get the Cub washed up. It took some scrubbing and buffing but came out pretty good. Its definitely the prettiest tractor I have now. I drained the sour gas (pics below), charged the battery and got it running though it runs choppy as the carb is clearly gunked up. It'll start beaking up then something will pass and it smooths out then it breaks up again.
I'll pull it off for a cleaning after the holidays. The PO said the battery always goes dead but didn't know why. Well that's clear to see as the battery took a charge and tested good. The tractors amp meter shows a constant drain and the alternator does not charge. If left hooked up it'll drain the battery overnight. Its got an ATV battery not a 26r so its a little big for the box. Its a good battery, too good to use as a core trade in but what am I going to use it for.
Oh well I'll find something.
Also the front lights work when they want to, the rear lamp is dead. I'm assuming I'll end up rewiring the Cub from scratch like my Lo-Boy which will be easier than constantly chasing electrical gremlins.
For now and the next couple of weeks the Cub will have Santa sitting in it as all my prior tractors have served this duty.
Afterward it will roll into the barn to have those small issues ironed out then through the year I'll be on the lookout for weights and a snowplow setup for it. Going to get my wife in on the plowing fun for next year.
Here's a few pics. Not bad for $800
How does a tractor run on this? Badly but it did!
Here are my two cubs together. Guess I've got to give the Lo-Boy some cosmetic attention.
You'll notice the Lo-Boy is a bare pan seat mounted on a rigid frame. The cushioned pan and spring post on the F-Cub certainly is more comfortable on my lower back.

Yes, I do my best to resist temptation but doing the math I couldn’t let this one go.
The rationale was that it wouldn’t break the bank and if I decided I shouldn’t have done it st that price I could get my money back without to much trouble.
Till that day comes we’ll enjoy it!
Right now it’s serving Santa duty in the front yard.

Re: Found a new one for the family
You did awful good on that one. Congrats!
Didn't know a Cub could run on rootbeer varnish.....
Knew an ol guy who's V.W. wagon thing ran out of fuel.
He walked to a nearby farm and hollered around , but didn't find anyone.
Helped himself to a gallon out of the "fuel" tank by one of the out buildings and was on his way.
He said it ran kind of rough and smoked but he made it to a gas station. Figured it was old fuel or something.
He stopped back in time to pay the farmer for the gallon he owed him.
The farmer said what tank did you use?
The guy told him and the farmer laughed and said , that's my flyspray!

That’s great!
The old stuff can cope with bad fuel.
About 3 years back I took fuel out of my leaking boat tank figuring it was just added I’d use it on my pickup. Oh what a mess that caused. I ended up pulling the bed, draining then wiping the tank, disassembling the fuel pump. For trying not to waste a few bucks I made myself a major headache. That’s was a lesson hard learned. That gas looked absolutely fine but the stuff this Cub ran on ... shows how finicky today’s technology is.
As for the Cub, I’ve since replaced the gas and wiped out the tank. It runs then comes close to stalling, catches itself runs and repeats. I added a “heavy” shot of marvel mystery oil to coat the tank and hopefully help the carb pass some of that varnish. Seems to be working a little. It’ll have time to soak while serving Santa duty.
The throttle rod needs adjustment as idle is back behind and actually off the sector. Even still it seems high.

My unwanted fuels go in a riding mower. (Cub brush hog is hard on the lawn. Well ,what I call a lawn).
That 4-stroke rider runs great on two stroke mix blended with reg. gas ,for some reason...
I'm picky about the Cob's fuel being fairly fresh and clean. And learned easy does it on the Seafoam.
The Cub's throttle levers.....I don't sweat where they are on the quadrant. I do notice though.
If the governor's are reasonably happy ,I'm happy. Mostly.

Yes I choose my words carefully when planning to mow the “lawn”. I don’t say grass but I guess some of it may be grass.
I plan to unhook the touch control linkage after the holidays to see if it’s the lever that’s stuck or it’s stuck on the unit itself. I sprayed the lever with wd40 but it didn’t do much.

WD was made to displace moisture...What it lubes by being wet does not penetrate well or remain as lube.
Keep tracking the linkage and you'll find something out of adjustment or worn.
A little slop up front goes a long ways in effect towards operators station.

It’s looking like this is going to end up being my wife’s tractor. She really likes it so I figured I’d see how it could be tailored to her and the first obvious thing that came to mind was to get a step for it to make climbing up easier.
Anyone here still make them? I’ve seen them on eBay but I’d rather deal first with a fellow forum member.
