Slack in fan hub

Postby cavingreer » Sun Mar 17, 2019 2:13 pm

Hey everyone! I've been cleaning up my fan clutch and ready to put it back together, but it looks like I have too much slack in the hub. The parts manual doesn't show any washer or spacers on the shaft, but as you can see from the photos I have about 1/4" play in the hub and it's been rubbing the inside of the front plate. I know it has to have some play in it so it can rotate, but should I put a washer behind the bolt head to keep it from rubbing?

Hi,
If you mean the hub is worn, and has end play, you could try making a washer the right thickness to correct it. It should have very little end play, just enough so it turns freely.

Below is the Cub parts manual pic of the fan assembly. :)

After you repair it, be sure to put motor oil in the assembly, like the Cub owner's manual shows.

That's what I was going by is the parts manual but yes it has enough end play that the lock nut has been eating into the front cover. I'll figure out enough washer to stop that and keep it free to rotate. Thanks again Glen!

There we go. One more step to restoration. Fan clutch all cleaned up, used 2 thrust washers and polished them down a bit to get the bolt snug but not binding. No longer rubbing the front plate, Painted up, filed with fresh oil and installed along with my 'new' fan shroud
