Front wheel hubcap question

Postby Clubless » Thu Mar 28, 2019 8:46 pm

The front wheel hubcap is missing on left front of my '55 cub. I think the outer bearing has been replaced with a non-cub style bearing. There are no threads to screw on the hubcap. This hub is on the repaired dogleg.

Any thoughts?

Hi,
I think someone has put on a larger OD washer, and it is covering the hole in the hub with the threads for the cap. I would take the cotter key out, and remove the washer, and see if there are threads.
You will need to buy or make a washer the same as the other side has, if it is the original size.

Below is a page from the 1955 Cub owner's manual, showing greasing the front wheels. :)

Below are pages from the Cub parts manual, showing the front axle. The spindle nut and washer are not shown with the spindle, number 16 in the pic, but are listed with 16 on the 2nd page. It gives the part number, and size of the washer there.
It is the last item at the 2nd 16 on the 2nd page. The spindle was changed before the 1955 Cub was made. I think that is the washer, I don't have one off the Cub I can measure.

Thanks Glen,

I’ll remove the cotter pin and nut and see what is going on. When you say “you will need to buy or make a washer the same as the other side has, if it is the original size” you are referring to the other wheel, right? The other hub has the hubcap.

Hi,
Yes, the other front wheel. It may be original if it has the cap on it.

I posted more above. :)

The slots on the nut for the cotter key should face out.

Glen, you were spot on with your assessment. Removed the cotter pin (actually a nail) and castle nut, found 2 washers PO used as dust cover. The original washer was in front of outer bearing so I tightened castle nut and put in a new cotter pin and cleaned up threads in hub then screwed in the hubcap. Now it looks like the other wheel. :{_}:

As always, thanks for your guidance!

Hi,
Good that you got it to work. :)

The wheel bearings may need cleaning and repacking with grease, before you use the Cub for work.
