Mowing w/Woods 59

Woods 59 is a finish mower. Its not meant to mow tall grass such as that.

I agree with John,I actually have to cut twice a week when it's well watered and sunny- just makes it so much easier. I just cut for the first time today which is a couple of weeks late for me. Normally I cut in second but had to cut in first and go no deeper than one blade width into the non cut grass since it was thick and and damp. I have a Mott but to change over for one use on a cub is not worth it,plus the cut is not as nice. For heavy duty cutting I use the Ford with it's Mott that is about once a year on an unimproved lot.

i wish my cub with that mower cut that nice, grass that high really takes all the power out of it.i usally have to cut it twice at that hight

I usually mow 3 times a week, depending on how fast the grass grows. I have a couple of spots that is really thicker than the rest and bogs the motor down. I have dropped down to first gear,but doesn’t seem to do any good,it just slows the speed down, but the motor still struggles until it gets out of the thick stuff.other than that, it runs very well.

Sharpened blades. Smart. Correcting blade angle to cut using only a portion of the blades, conserving horsepower. Smart. Mowing in the appropriate gear for conditions. Smart. Very smart. Only other thing I might've done is mowed in stages, a rough cut with the deck height higher first, then a finish cut after, but as you said you wanted to test it under worst case scenario conditions.

I'd rather get seat time mowing than snow plowing.....

I mow 5 acres, it takes app. 3.75 hrs in 2nd gear.
If l had to do that 3x a week, l'd def plant a diff crop.
As much as l enjoy seat time, that would be a bit much.

This post is pretty encouraging. I guess I need a little more adjustments (timing/carb/governor??). My grass isn't nearly so tall, mower height is set about the same (bar in back is in second hole from the bottom), but sometimes my Cub starts to sputter under a load. On the flat in first it seems fine, but the grass isn't that tall yet.

This is the mower adjustment that is very important and "about" may not be good enough. This is the process I go through to set the cutting height to 3" at the front of the mower blade(s) and plus 3" at the back:

Air up all four tires to the correct operating pressure
Park on a smooth, level concrete surface
Lower the mower to the cutting position
For the sake of safety, disengage the PTO and shut off the tractor
Move to either side of the mower and align the cutting blade so that it is to the front of the tractor
Take your height gauge and measure the cutting height at the front
Do the same on the other side
Are the heights the same
If so, great, the mower is cutting level side-to-side
If not proceed to level the mower by adjusting the casters (if using the casters for cutting height control) or the lift chains (if not using the caster wheels, my preferred method) to level the mower
Once the deck is level adjust the forward tilt to achieve a difference of 3/8" from front to back (measured at the blade tips with the guage). The blade higher in back means you are only cutting the grass once

I don't normally use the caster wheels, I find them to not be useful for the type of mowing I do. The mower I'm using in this post is for someone else and I wanted to be sure everything worked as it should.

Mine is third from the bottom, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for your setup.
