I can confirm most of what you have been told here. The chrome emblems are later day additions. There is red paint in several places the factory never put it: the magneto, rear rims, seat pan. The seat was originally covered with a pad. There was no paint where the pad covered it. The magneto has had an external (battery ignition) coil added. This is a fairly common fix but combines the disadvantages of a magneto and battery ignition onto one tractor.
What are the big pipes that run front to back for?

They don't appear to go far enough forward for anything front mounted. My guesses are either something on the back or braces due to a broken engine block.

Re: Chrome emblems on a '48 Cub
The hood for a tractor where the emblems would be correct do not have the raised ribs but instead have a rectangular recessed area with holes predrilled for “Farmall Cub” and “McCormick” above. The Lo-Boy version of the same years uses the same hood with all the same holes drilled but just have the “International Cub” emblems. The holes for the McCormick emblem are there but are not used.
The hood you have was used from ‘47-‘54. The ones that used the stainless emblems (of that type) from late ‘54- mid ‘58. At that point the front portion of the hood was flat on the sides, no recessing, no ribs.
If you enlarge the pic below you can see the recessed area for the stainless emblem hood
The deepest part of the recess is at the front .

Can you post a photo of the back of the tractor? I see chains hanging from the rear lift. I'm curious if they're attached to the back ends of those pipes.

Maybe just a tad off-topic, but I took Stanton's paint thread and created a pdf out of it, just maybe one day it could be added in the pdf file section.

And BTW, welcome to the forum!. That's a nice looking tractor that should serve you well whether you want to run it like it is or restore it. It looks like you are well on your way to getting it going again. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

Re: Chrome emblems on a '48 Cub
Thank you all for the information! The grandson was not a tractor person and he did not really know much besides that it had the emblems every time he saw it. I'm leaning towards an older paint job (I have a cub that was restored 25 years ago and it's not as rough as this one and it was working tractor) and the varnished tank and other things make me think someone must have redone decades ago. For all I know the uncle that lived on the property redid it. I think I will be keeping the emblems on it just because it's not a normal thing. Also for those asking about the metal poles, it is for a home made hitch/3 point that I assume the grandpa made as well. It works quite well towing my stationary engines around. They also seemed to have beefed up the back to handle more weight against the 3 point. Its defiantly an interesting tractor and the pride of my fleet.

I agree, I would leave the emblems on, they're part of it's history.
