Times Are A Changin'

Postby ricky racer » Sat May 25, 2019 8:41 pm

Today I stopped into 3 different auto parts stores looking for some lapping compound to lap in some valves. I went to Advance Auto, Autozone and O'Reilly's. Of the 3 salesmen that asked me "can I help you", not a one of them even knew what lapping compound was.... Two of them were young so I guess I shouldn't expect too much but one of them was in his late 40's or early 50's. I was at least able to find some at the 3rd store I stopped at.

Ricky,
Not surprising but then how often do you need to do a "valve job" on a modern vehicle. I had a 1973 Chevy Nova with the 250cid inline 6. Needed a valve job at 112,000 miles.
2002 Chevy Astro had 261,000 miles on it last September when I decided it was time. Engine was still strong. My 2006 Chevy Silverado with the 4.8L V8 has 212,000 miles on it and still runs like a champ.
2012 Chevy Malibu with 2.4L 4cyl has 143,000 miles on it with the original spark plugs. I guess I like Chevrolet!

In our 4H Small Engine Club ("Piston Pushers"), we teach the kids how to grind, lap, and adjust valves.

Usually when I ask for something like that the counter person asks me what year, make, and model it is for.

Yeah, I wanted some Spar Varnish for a restoration project and all I got was blank stares everywhere I asked.

Posts like this make me thankful for my local NAPA. They probably have muffler bearing grease and blinker fluid on a shelf somewhere and at least two of the counter guys would know where it is :D John
