Needing some advise
Needing some advise. I now have my 49 up and running prettly well, finished fixing her up. Just needs couple adjustments. When I go to give her some throttle two or three notches the govenor surges two or three times then it smoothes out at the higher rpm? so my question is why is it surging? I have adjusted carb to govenor linkage as recomended. I think this is also why my hydraulics arent acting write goes down forward motion smooth but going back up it pulls the engine whay down. Anyway any advise truly appreciated. I will try and get some pics posted of her real soon. Thanks again Alan

The ydralic system has a retarder valve when lowering equipment to keep it form going down to fast. with no load on the hydralics, and the weather fairly cool, it produces a signicant load on the engine.
Have you checked the governor cross shaft for play where it goes into the fitting at the governor. With the engine stopped, set the hand throttle to the point the carb lever is about mid way. take hold of the rod to the carb and seeif it will move forward and backward easily. It should push against a spring, or if it moves a little with no opposition the shaft is probably worn where it enters the governor fitting. if this is the case it can be removed by disconnecting the carb rod and then taking out the 2 bolts that hold the mounting bracket on the left frotn corner of the engine. Then pu;; the rod straight out to the side. Depending on the amount of wear a little shim stock may be needed, or if only a little wear, clean the shaft end and the socket it goes in and apply a little Loctite. Let it cure a couple hours before you reassemble. some people use JB Weld, but I prefer something a little easier to remove if I ever need to take it apart. I made a shim form a soda can for my 48 about 19 or 20 years ago before I knew about Loctite, and 2 ro 3 years ago I replaced it with a new shim, and also used Loctite. Yes, that cub gets a lot of use.

hey fellas ty for the responce. EZ The cub has a new a new zenith Carb on it. John there is some play where the rod goes into the govenor but I cant seem to get it to pull out and I dont want to brake somthing. Is there anything else that could be holding it into the govenor. Yes I pulled loose the two bolts in the lever bracket you wer talking about. On the hydraulics there somthing not write because my other cub they run fine with out hardly pulling the tractor down that hard. Thanks again Alan

this sounds like a legitimate case of "hunt".....have you tried turning in the bumper spring adjuster on the front end of the governor?
One needs to only turn it by quarter turns, and then test drive, as overtightening will raise low idle speed.
Mine did something similar to what you are describing, when I gave it more throttle going up hill, this fixed the majority of the problem.
Mine is a square head bolt, with a lock nut.
