Light Bulb Question

Postby lyle11 » Tue Aug 20, 2019 10:06 am

I have 2 teardrop style headlights I removed from an H I used to own. I want to mount one as a taillight on each of my Cub Lowboys with Red light bulbs installed. Both Cubs have been converted to 12 volts.

From reading this forum and looking at bulb light sockets for sale, it looks like the base for an 1156 bulb is the same as the original 1133 bulb. On EBay I see for sale:

1156 Red 12 V 27 W bulbs. Will these work?

I have read about the LED bulbs but don’t expect to use the taillight enough to justify spending much money. The red bulbs on EBay $5.95 for 2 including shipping.

Thanks

Yes. I have installed the LED equivalent of 1156's in my Cub.

The Socket type on the tear drop 1156/ba15s. As long as the description says 1156 or ba15S they are fine.

I just used these on a rear light https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... 698/12876/

Looks for about twice the price plus shipping I can get LED so I’ll probably go that route.

Thanks Inairam.

With 12vs it is less an issue. I have a lot of 6 volters and the saving of the amps is big. All of my cubs with tear drops are 6volts.

When looking at the price of LEDs you have to check the lumens. There is a larger range in output of the bulbs that fit. The main original incandescent lights are ~350. The white LEDs lights I use are over 400. The red one i listed I used in the older teardrop with the separate red light.

Re: Light Bulb Question

Postby lyle11 » Tue Oct 01, 2019 7:32 pm

I finally got around attempting to replace the 6 volt bulbs in the pancake headlights I bought long ago from TM. I bought 12 volt 1156 bulbs. The base looks like the 6 volt bulb I removed. I bought Sylvania brand bulbs, although made in China it is a brand name. Specifically on the new bulbs it says 1156L.

The bulb base looks the same but it won’t twist into the slot. It is like it is just a tiny bit too large. The 6 volt bulb installs normally. There are no numbers or name on the 6 volt bulb that came with the headlight.

I also tried bulb grease on the the base to lube it and rubber gloves to get a good grip twisting the bulb. It won’t twist.

Is 1156L different than 1156?

Any other ideas what bulb I can try?

Ba15S?

Thanks

I think the L after 1156 means Long Life. The new 12 Volt 1156 bulbs fit perfectly in a new reflector I bought from TM for another project. I suspect the foreign made headlights have a slightly undersized socket, perhaps supplied with their own bulb with a slightly undersized base. They are useless to me as 6 volt.

I measured the 6 and 12 volt bulb bases with a caliber and the diameters appear the same. But, measuring across the 2 little tabs that protrude from the bulb base are slightly, but measurably wider on the 12 volt bulb. I’ll file them down a little bit and if that fails I may have no choice but to use emery cloth in the socket to remove a little bit of metal unless someone has another idea.

They are real close in size. The new bulb inserts with some pressure but won’t turn.

Thanks

Lyle, you may also want to check the height of the metal tangs with reference to the solder contact on the bottom of the base. "Inserts but won't turn" sounds like the tangs are too low or high in the socket.

Can you post a picture of the base?

it should be " Single Contact Bayonet" the tabs on the side should be even not offset.

I found an 1156 bulb in storage from some past project or for a car I once owned and that bulb fit more snugly than the 6V bulb, but it inserted and twisted into the slots without excessive effort. Being impatient, and not wanting to start buying more bulbs, I took emery cloth to the base of the 12 V Sylvania bulbs and removed some of the metal. I could see marks on the base each time I inserted it so that’s where I removed more metal. I had to remove enough that the silver plating is gone from the brass. It eventually went in and twisted into place with a nice firm fit. I cleaned up the base and socket and coated with bulb grease.

I broke a tab off the other Sylvania bulb ruining it so too late for a photo.

Based on the one 1156 unknown brand bulb fitting snugger but installing and twisting into the slots, I can only conclude that the socket is slightly undersized and there are some variations in the size of the bulb base from different manufacturers.

It is my understanding from searching this forum that there is no such thing as a 6V 1156 bulb. A 6 V bulb with this base would have a different number. So, my bulb from storage labeled 1156 with no voltage stamped on the base is a 12 Volt bulb.

Also, TM no longer sells these headlights. They only sell 6 V sealed beam pancake headlights. I needed another pair and wanted the style with the small bulb so I bought them from another source with 12 Volt bulbs already installed.

I am adding lights to a Lowboy so I won’t actually test the headlights for a week or two.

Thanks for your replies.

The equivalent to an 1156, but in 6 volt, had a number something like 1136(1133, thanks Don!). I bought them one time at Napa, they are more scarce now.
