Postby Flowmaster76 » Tue Oct 15, 2019 10:27 am

:tractor: hey everybody!! My name is Zach! I am a new member here and have a few questions!! First off, I am going to be purchasing a 1949 cub on Friday!! Which I am very excited about!! The seller explained to me he doesn’t know much about tractors but that the tractor runs good!! The only problem is that the carburetor has some problems!! What would you recommend I do?? I have looked at buying a new carburetor, but they are on the pricy side!! I am only 18 years old so my funds aren’t very high hahah! thank you guys very much for the input!!

Well it’s a red flag if he says it runs good but has carb problems and that he doesn’t know much about tractors. Maybe not a deal breaker, just go in with eyes open. Pics and or video would help us help you if you can get any.

Welcome.

Use the search function top right of page. Most Cub related questions have been answered.

The IH carburetor, standard issue on the 49 Cub, is very simple to repair. Even if the carburetor has been replaced with a Zenith, usually no need to buy a new carburetor.

Be sure to search for carburetor tips. The top of the carburetor has to be pulled straight up or you will break a small thin tube.

Since you have not yet purchased the Cub, Quick links, top left of page has a listing of things to look for before purchase.
I have an excuse. CRS.

If the seller says there is a carburetor problem, be sure to have the price of a new carburetor ($230, not of one of the cheap knock-offs) with you when you talk to the seller. If he says it is cheap/quick/easy to get it running properly, offer to come back after he has done it.

I tried to add a picture but it says the file is too big. The tractor was his fathers but unfortunately his father passed away. The tractor is very clean and has been converted to 12 volt system. He said it runs and drives it just doesn’t run consistently.

Steering arms need to be checked out. They have the wrong bolts in there. I see rear wheel weight. That’s a positive, especially if both are there. I can’t tell much beyond that as I’m on my phone and pics just blur when I enlarge. Couldn’t tell which carb is there because of that.

Whatever carb it is , it looks clean enough to have had recent attention.
Carb=fuel , and there may be more going on than the carb...
Could be's like inside the tank ,or the strainer ,or a screen at carb inlet , to a warped carb top or bad gasket , to improper adjustments to governor linkage and carb after an install. Choke lever on backside of carb could be in wrong position, confusing the operators adjustment of the choke rod.

Make do bolts have been spotted and mentioned..
One rear tire looks decent but pics don't tell everything.
If the other rear is good too , that saves some bucks and labor replacing them. Check rims for major rot..

Missing the grill. If that matters to you.

A lot depends on the price.
IF the seller is parting with it cheap I wouldn't beat him up about a price.
But I've not met such a seller yet....

Lots to do when/if you acquire it.
Fluids.
Checking valves.
Ect.

Study carb enough ahead of time so you recognize it's/any faults right away. Save yourself "redo's".
The previously mentioned tube could already be broke. Or float level wrong. Or adjustment screw improperly adjusted. Or a jet could be clogged or partially clogged.
Main is easy to check ,if you've done your homework as to how.

The main thing is, what's the asking price?

Thank you everybody for the feedback!! I really appreciate it!! To answer some questions!! One tire is cracked on the side wall, which means it must be replaced!! He is including a brand new inner tube and rim!! When I first get the tractor, I plan on taking off the carb and cleaning it thoroughly!! Also, when I checked it out this past weekend, I noticed somebody had messed with the fuel lines!! They have gotten rid of the fuel sediment bowl and replaced it with rubber lining and a fuel filter!! It also does not come with a battery, which isn’t that big of a deal. He is asking $700

Can't see it well, but it looks like a later Zenith carburetor. If so, much of what was stated above about the carburetor does not apply. If the carburetor was recently changed, see if they still have the original as it is probably repairable. Also looks like somebody added an in-line fuel filter, which may be part of the problem. This suggests fuel problems related to a dirty tank. May also mean the problems are not fuel related at all.

If it runs, $700 isn't a bad price. With a bad rear tire, it isn't a super deal.

I am new to all this myself, but if you can drive it I would think $700 isn't out of line for around here (S.C.)

You have matching tires that hold air. If it starts you can not go too wrong for $700. if it does not start and the engine is free you can not go wrong for 700.

A "carburetor problem" could be anything the current owner does not know what is wrong.

Get the current owned to define what he or she means by "carburetor problem"
