Part out or fix?

Postby Sadcub » Mon Mar 16, 2020 5:49 pm

This is my first '48 Cub. I did not know much about them when I bough it, and it is pretty rough. I have since bought a decent '48, I am having a hard time trying to figure out what to do with this one. The right block ear was busted and brazed (holding though). Lower radiator housing cracked and brazed. Wrong seat and grill. Floor board rotted where battery box would have been. It actually runs really decent and clutch seems good. It would cost way more to fix it than it would ever be worth, but I hate to part out a running tractor. Not sure really sure that what is there that is good for parts is really worth anything either. I do have a nice standard bore R7 bare block I bought for it. I will loose money on this no matter what direction I go. Anyone have any thoughts?

Runs decent? Keep it as a worker. Put a sickle mower on it or a mid mount blade and go to work! :)

Get yourself a set of Berlin's block braces, and It should be good to go, or take it to a Cub Fest with your new block & and any parts you might need and it will be done with lots of good help. TJ

I would keep it. If the tractor has a draw bar, purchase the block braces, and use it. Cubs are great for towing a light trailer or small tilling implements.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Fix it over time as you use it.

As tmays mentioned, keep it as a worker then tinker with it as time and resources permit. I wouldn't part it out.

The block had a hairline crack in the water jacket that I fixed by drilling to stop the crack on either side and filling with lab metal. It seems to hold fine. The original radiator leaked, so I but some Bar’s stop leak in and it seems to be holding ok for the moment. It had a drawbar, but I took it put it on the good cub. The seat does drive me crazy. I need to find a pan type.

I have the rest of the lift linkage. It had a Woods Belly mower I took off when I was working on the block. It really did not have enough power to really cut well. I might try the mower on my other ‘48 with a fresh motor. I have a cultivator setup that I really want to put to use, guess I could try it on this tractor and see how it does.

Back in the day a lot of equipment was a lot rougher than that and it still worked on the farm and kept the family fed. TJ

Look on this forum for tips on how to properly set up the belly mowers. One that is poorly set up will seem to not have enough power to cut well. But setting it up properly will make a big difference in how it cuts.
