I think I have the pic posting situation now (we'll see). Anyhow, I really appreciate the big welcome from all and thanks for offering to share your knowlegde of cubs. Speaking of... I'm hoping you folks can field a few questions right now. I'll try to be as clear as possible in my descriptions as always.
1. WHERE can I obtain a full service and parts manuals? I come from an age of electronic ignitions, high output coils, efi, hei's etc. So I found it difficult to work on my ford 850, i'm having problems with the cub too.
2. My crankshaft pulley is...WOBBBLY. Its not causing to much problem except for the belt wear etc. I do see a bolt waaay in there and I think I have an extension long enough but since the pulley thats on there has the manual start setup so I dont want to be too eager to attempt removal until I spoke with you folks who know. Is this a straight forward removal of that bolt to remove the pulley or should I know something else?Where do I get a new pulley?
3. My carb hasn't caused too many problems (still doesn't but...) When the weather was a tad warmer I would choke it to start and all worked out well, now when I start it (here in New England) It starts pretty good with a quick shot of eyther (i tried) but now I have to leave the choke on without turning it off. I f I do, it runs terrible even when well warmed up. Again, not the biggest concern but I try to keep the fuel and electronic systems pretty tight on these older toys. Or i'll never get it started again. Thats all for now, I hope the pic goes through!!! PS thats not me, its my wife on last fri snowstorm PPS note the very "rigged" plow setup, just got it,no time to put it on and make the parts etc etc to do this. Thanks in advance all. Tom N

Tom,

Welcome to the greatest forum. Rudi has the manuals on the Cub manual server. (his welcome wagon Spiel has the link.) There are many places to buy them as well if you want a hard copy. I got a set from Binderbooks.com.

As far as the carb. Check to make sure you have good fuel flow to the carb. If you do it may be time to do a rebuild of the Carb. Lurker Carl has a great how to in the how to section of the forum.

My '49 would not run on a full open choke either. I found I had two oil fouled spark plugs, #3 and 4. Cleaning them didn't help, they had to be replaced. I used Champion D15Y plugs for now since it's all the dealer had, but I expect to got to a hotter plug next tune up, probably D21.
It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. (Abe Lincoln, I think).

Tom - as the other fellows said - welcome to the forum. The crank pulley is a press fit. If it is wobbly, you need to change it before it does more damage. You should not be seeing a bolt head down inside the pulley. And the one you see is not holding the pulley on (normally) . It is possible that a previous owner reamed out the pulley and used a bolt and washer to keep the pulley from flying off. Typically, the crank pulley pulls very hard. You may not have that issue. If you use the search feature of the forum and type in "crank pulley" without the quotes you will find a wealth of information about the procedure. Normally it takes a backer, a good puller and some heat to get the pulley off.

As mentioned, Rudi has the manuals on his server. You can and should purchase hard copies from Binder Books at http://www.binderbooks.com

Your carb issue sounds like either a fuel supply problem or it's sucking air somewhere on the intake. With cold weather, it could be either. Remove and carefully clean the main jet on the carb, assure that you have adequate fuel supply to the carb and then look for loose manifold bolts, cracks etc. on the air intake side of things.

If we can be of assistance, just let us know.

One request though, If you don't mind, could you put your general location in your profile? You can also add yourself to our map at this link:

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I got my manuals from Carter and Grunewald in Wis, but any Case/IH dealer should be able to get them. Good investment, about $80-$100 total.

Can't say about Binder's, but the 'Factory' manuals are the latest editions (30 years now!) and cover all Cubs. My only complaint is that the TC rebuild was for a far different unit, than my 50 has, probably same as my 71 Cub.

Tom:

Sorry for the delay, but I have been off forum for a few days....

Everything you asked about is discussed in the welcome wagon text below. Binder is the best place to get the manuals, but until then please utiilize the on-line resources.., that is why they are on-line   but seriously.. the manuals from Binder are invaluable and everyone should have a set..

Welcoem and enjoy!

Anyhoosie, here it is :!:

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These are intended to complement the businesses who support FarmallCub.com Website.

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's :?: . Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are two must have's in anyone's collection.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D
