engine block removal - stuck

Postby msuchoff » Tue May 12, 2020 7:33 pm

Trying to pull engine block, but won't budge.
Removed 6 bolts - that it right?
Only thing holding it on should be the locating pin on each side.
Tried PB blaster on locating pins.
Tried to wedge at seam.
Stumped.

Did you remember to remove the clutch housing cover on the bottom? BTDT...4 nuts and bolts.
And have you already removed the front end, because another possibility is the steering wheel getting hung up on the steering support?
And yes, those dowel/alignment pins can hold on tight!!

You mean the clutch inspection plate? Removed that to get to screws holding oil pan.
The alignment pins, are they on the clutch housing or engine block.
If block stuck, then what?

I have seen the dowel pins go either way. Has it separated at all...even a crack? At cubfests, it sometimes takes several good-sized guys to split it. They have manhandled the 2 halves, wagging the two sections opposite directions to get the separation started. Not sure that answer helps if you are doing it alone! Sorry.

stick a pry bar up from the bottom of the bellhousing behind the flywheel and pry, the dowel pins fit very tight

Hi,
The 2 dowel pins should be in the engine block, the clutch housing should slip off of them.

If 1 or both come out with the clutch housing, remove them and hammer them into the engine block.
Look at them closely, one end should have a little more of a taper at the end than the other end, the tapered end helps it start into the hole in the clutch housing easier.
So the more tapered end goes to the rear.

Below is a pic from TM Tractor of the rear of the engine block, showing the pins. :)

Here was my single person solution.
I raised engine hoist so my wooden jack stands were off ground about an inch. I then release the jack and the force when the 2x6 hit the floor split engine about 1/4 inch.

I guess I did such a good job cleaning mating faces 20 years ago that it must have formed a quantum entanglement weld

If I was going to use that method, I'd have the bolts installed, backed out an eighth inch or so.

Jim Becker. Thanks for advise. That's exactly what I did - have bolts loosely installed. I just wanted to separate the engine slightly so I could get a pry bar in. Engine was stuck because of paint on the locator pins.
