I'm stuck in reverse!

Hey fellas,

Was plowing the new snow in the driveway and I thought the transmission started making a ticking noise, epsecially with the plow down in third gear (just kidding.)

Anyway just before I got done the tranny stuck in reverse. The shifter will move into the 2 and 3 spots, but the tractor stalls immediately like it's in reverse and 2 or 3 at the same time. I can't get it to go back into the 1 position at all.

I took the tranny cover off and none of the shifter ears are broken off, but I can't move the R/1 fork by hand (not sure if I should be able to or not.)

Any ideas?

Allen, rock the tractor back and forth a little to take the pressure off of the slider gear. With a screwdriver you should be able to pop it back into neutral. You will then need to check to see if the shifting fork is bent or broken.

Allen,

Many of us would not be able to move the shifter by hand if the detent balls are doing their job. It will require a little prying with a screwdriver, but don't break anything.

Woohoo! Thanks for the tips guys. Rocking the tractor helped me to move the shifter forks, and once I figured out how to get them lined up and put the shifter back in everything's OK again.

Somehow, the shifter fork for R/1 got pushed all the way back and then the shifter lever popped out of it. That meant I could select 2/3 OK, but I couldn't get back inside the fork for R/1, it was too far back, or "stuck in R" basically.

That's why I couldn't move, either, R was stuck in, and selecting 2 or 3 just locked up the tranny.

I went and finished up the plowing job and it worked like a champ.

This was my same problem today when I finished plowing.

Neutral was reverse, couldn't get into reverse, 1st was reverse, 2nd and 3rd would stall the engine.

Followed the suggestions and fixed the problem.

I had the same ticking noise before it got locked in reverse too.

My 1/R fork was loose, which obviously contributed to the problem. I popped it back into neutral and then tightened down the fork and all seems good....I guess only time will tell.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help, and let me finish plowing before the ice/rain line comes to us!

14 inches on Thursday night and 11 more today!

I had the same problem yesterday. I spent all day Friday picking up a Cub. The PO said "she ticks a little in the gera box". When I went to get it off the trailer at home it was stuck. My wife and kids all watched as I climbed all over the place trying to figure out what was going on. It was dark and cold and I was tired, so I went in the house. Saturday I opened the shifter cover and slid it into nuetral as BD suggested to you and rolled it off the trailer. The forks were bent and the shifter plate was messed up. It's all good now, just in time too.....

The 1st and reverse fork is famous for breaking in a cub I guess cause they were used the most if your fork is not loose or broken check the shifter

we know most were plowing snow or it least the temp is cold 30.F
is the trans oil thick ??
mixed with water (slush)??

what other things could have played a part in the failure of several shifters ??????

I guess if you dont change your fluids on a regular basis you are going to have water in it and it could freeze up or get slushy I use Hi Tran it will mix with water and want freeze as quickly, also the Hi Tran is thinner that 90 weight gear oil and doesnt get thick I guess that why IH put it in there to start with

My tranny fluid is definitely emulsified with water. It's a mocha brown color. I had changed it when I got the cub 2 years ago, and it lives in the barn, but obviously when I am plowing water is getting in. Guess I need a new seal to start with, then change the fluid soon. What's the best way to flush it all out?

I have read about Diesel and Kerosene and running with those in there for a little while, then change that out and put Hy-Tran in?

Are there pros and cons to both diesel and kerosene or do they both work fine?

shifter stiff due to cold, so shoving it pretty hard to switch gears, combined with a worn tower plate.
