oil change

Postby Tucker » Sun Dec 18, 2005 1:41 pm

Quick question...
I just drained and replaced the oil in my crank case, filled back up w/ 3 qts.

I also drained the oil out of where the oil filter goes. Do I need to add oil back to where the filter is, or does the the engine pump it back in?

Thanks!

The oil will get pumped back in to the filter. Watch your oil guage on start up to make sure it is pumping. It might take a few seconds to build up pressure.

I'll be starting my cub up for the first time after a complete engine rebuld.

Is there anything else I should be doing besides pulling that plug on hte carb side of the tractor and priming the oil pump ?

Thanks Rick

Rick:

My opinion. Prior to starting an engine after a rebuild. Prime the oil pump. Prime the entire oil system.

Pull the spark plugs and add a tablespoon of oil to each cylinder. Crank the engine for 30 seconds. Wait a minute, crank another 30 seconds until oil pressure starts to build up. If you have the top off the oil filter housing you can quit cranking once oil starts to enter the filter housing.

Once the entire oil system has been primed - start the engine.

Thanks Eugene.

After the spending the embarrassing amount I did in having the engine re-welded and rebuilt with larger pistons, I want to do everything I can to make sure that this engine lasts another 57 years.

Oops! My mistake.

Now, if only I could fix my thinker as easily as I can fix my Cub.........
