Trailer size for 1948 Farmall Cub

Postby Laslonimne » Mon Aug 24, 2020 12:40 pm

I am considering the purchase of a 1948 Farmall Cub. I’ll need to trailer it home and must rent a trailer to do so. It has an attached belly mower and the owner tells me the overall width is 5 feet. A 5x9 U-Haul with ramp shows an inside width of 4’9” so I assume I’ll need the 6x12 with ramp.
I also assume that with the low deck height of the mower, it might be tough to clear the angle between the loading ramp and the trailer deck. Can someone with a bit of experience share any advice? It will be much appreciated.

I’ve tried to get an answer by using the forum search with no luck, but then I am new to the forum.

The cub will fit in the trailer, but not with the mower deck attached to tractor. I would go with the bigger trailer.

I rented a 6 x 12 UHaul once for a cub and while it is 6 feet wide inside, the space at the ramp was like 55 inches if I remember correctly. The cub got in with a little rub on the tires. I can't remember if the wheels were turned in or out but it just made it...I was 2 months into cubs at that time so I didn't know about that stuff. The mower will not fit.

Putting An 8 foot 4x4 under the low end of the ramp will reduce the angle at the top of the ramp, but not hinder you from getting the front wheels on the ramp.

I have put a plain Cub on a 5X9 U-haul and it will fit if the wheels are set to their narrowest or near-narrowest position (ramp and opening in the back of the trailer being 4'9"). The 6x12 has a much larger cargo area, but the ramp and back opening of the trailer is still limited to 4'9" wide, so you'll have to remove the mower deck to get it to fit regardless which trailer you use. I believe they keep the opening at the back that small to discourage people from trying to load cars on these trailers.

Get the bigger trailer. It offers more options with balancing the load on the trailer as well.

An easy way to reduce the angle at the top of the ramp is to use a small rise to back the trailer up to.

Which belly mower is it? Do the sides of the mower extend beyond the wider of the front or rear wheels?

Thanks to all who pointed out the ramp and rear “gate” dimension on the 6x12. I missed that when looking at trailers.
Guess I need to look for a car-hauler or be prepared to remove the mower deck, which I really don’t want to do while the trailer is rented by the day and I’m 800 miles from home.

Some mowers can be lifted high and temporarily chained up. This would take care of any clearance problem at the transition from the ramp to the trailer deck. Without knowing which mower, don't know if this can be done.

UHaul used to have a dual axle 6’x12’ trailer with a full width tailgate, not a ramp. Used one several times, just put car ramps under the tailgate.

Car carrier can work if the wheel spacing is correct. My son used a UHaul car carrier to get his Cub Loboy with Woods 59 on it, a snow blade, FH Mott Flail Mower, and L-F194 Moldboard Plow.

You are correct, and they still do. That might be the way to go for this one.

Get a car hauler. They can't be that much more than the tiny ones? Another thing is make sure if it's single axle that it's a 5000 pound axle. Too small a trailer and it might have a 3500# axle and your close to overloading it with the weight of the Cub, the mower and trailer. I would not be so much of the safety police (it's very important regardless) bit it's their trailer, and if a bearing saws a hub in half and the wheel falls off cause of their lack of maintenance it will be your fault if they see a load that's too heavy for the trailer.
Just pointing out that because it fits it does not mean that it's within the limits of the trailer.

I have a car hauler tandem axle trailer and I can drive a huge tractor onto it and be WAY over the weight limit.

Rented this trailer several times. It's a beast. Emtpy weight is 1,700+ lbs.

Good thought on the car carrier...I used one twice and they were great....although I used it for 2 Fergusons, I am sure they will work for a cub. A little tricky chaining up using the criss cross tie down because they are designed to use the wheel straps, but it is certainly doable.
