G, if it sparks at TDC, you have the timing correct. the ohter factor is the spark advance mechanism of the distribtuor, which will advance the spark as the tractor runs faster..

I just put a 66 year engine into Roland, the engine had a distributor now it has a mag which I static timed. Just for the fun of it I put a timing light on him and sure enough the timing was spot on the 16 degree mark on the pulley.
