The Govenor is late.

Postby Harold R » Sat Jan 07, 2006 10:41 am

I have my '50 in good enough shape to ride around a bit. I've been wanting to run it for a while to check for leaks and such, so I took it to the back of my property where I have a few small hills. I went up the hill in second gear, only to have the tractor bog until it was 3/4 of the way up. Then, the govenor kicks in and makes good power the rest of the way up. I repeated this several times and it's consistent. About a 3 to 4 second delay, then kicks in normally. Sounds like an adjustment is needed? I've never fooled with the govenor other than installing one.
On the plus side, after 30 minutes of running, nothing dripping, no overheating, no smoke.  8)

I had the same problem. Check for play in ALL the linkage between the carburetor and the governor, including the rockshaft. All the worn rods and shafts with enlarged keyway, flange and holes on mine made the carburetor nearly unresponsive to the governor. Another place that wears is the governor spring and the 2 holes it mounts in.

Yup, checked all that. When I went back together with it I made sure it was all tight. This isn't the same govenor that was on it when I got it. The P.O. said it didn't work, and I confirmed it what little I drove it before I tore it down. I had a practically new one from TM I had gotten before for another tractor but never used it, so I put it on. It is working, but not as soon as I would like. Going to read the adjustment process. I think it's got something to do with the adjustment that's on the cover. :?

Must be my alter ego, evil twin, or that tear in the time/space continuum messing with John again.

Harold,

Could it be a problem with the spring? It must fit between the holes exactly with neither any play nor tension to work right. Sometimes the springs require a little tweaking (bending) to come out right.
