Handlift
Hey everyone. I know most of you are hydraulic people, but l'm a traditionalist and have a problem.
The spring on one of my handlifts broke today. Right at the loop/hook where it attaches at the rear.
I did a quick search on the forum sponsors pages as well as Steiner's. It doesn't appear that anyone carries them. Probably because they are not a highly saught after item. JP has a heading for handlift, but no parts listed.
My question is this..
Are they available? If so where?
Does anyone have a "quick fix" how to that they could share?
If those specific springs aren't available, what do you recommend for a replacement? Off the top of my head l thought the old type garage door springs that used cables and pulleys.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.
In the mean time l'll rob peter to pay paul, l have the same set up on my other Cub.
Thanks in advance
Hutch

I wouldn’t rely on JP’s website to be a good indicator of what they have in stock. I’d recommend calling them. If no luck there, put an ad in The Vine.

If it's the spring I'm thinking of, no. Too large and heavy-duty for a common hardware store.

I got some about that size on my zero turn mower. Might check your lawn mower shop.

Re: Handlift
Stanton, you are correct. It's the "helper" lift assist spring.
I'm sure there are springs out there for other applications that may be the same "size", but this one has a particular configuration. I thought about heating this one at a spot just long enough to make a new hook, but then what do l do to temper it so it isn't to brittle after heating. I mean so it shortens it by one curl, you can adjust for that with the bolt on the other end, correct? Correct tempering would be my concern.
Don, you're probably right about calling JP, but itt being Sat, l didn't think they'd be answering. I'll try during the week next week.

Re: Handlift
Check field cultivator springs. Look at Agrisupply website to see if any are close. I know my style is larger diameter and thicker .
Another though is to call or email Burtch Store tractors in NC.

Is it me or did TST post disappear? I swear I read that he thought he had one but had to check in the light.
Maybe he deleted it?

Re: Handlift
Thanks Clemson,
Burch's web page says they are sold out of handlift assemblies but l emailed them in hopes they have just the spring laying around.
For anyone else looking for used Cub parts, it appears from their web page the they have lots of stuff. Just a quick look showed draw bars, depth adjusters for 193 plows, and bins of cultivator and planter parts. Don't know how they are to deal with, but l'll keep you advised.

Re: Handlift
Burch is near me...the owner is a very nice young man! Some of his prices are very high, but others are reasonable. He has several trailers FULL of used parts, plus he's started offering new common parts.
Suggest a phone call to confirm what he actually has.

Yes they have a lot of stuff. Lots I have found may not be listed. They also are good to deal and communicate with I have found.

Yes some prices are high on some stuff. But some of this stuff hasn't been made in 50+ years. Sure you can wait around and look for deals but there is a lot of value placed on that need it now mentality.
The OP could scour the back roads and FB and sale pages looking for a complete parts tractor that doesn't run and buy it for $350. Get the spring he needs part the rest out and make $1000 but he probably doesn't want to go to all that effort and just wants his spring now. I see both sides of this argument.
