L54 Blade Height

Postby grnspot » Wed Sep 08, 2021 6:31 am

Haven't posted in a while!

I have a 1961 Cub Lo Boy that I'm wanting to put a belly blade on. I understand I may need to make some adjustments on the mounting brackets. Just need to know if the blade itself is vertically shorter for the LO Boy compared to a regular blade. I've measured a friend's blade from bottom of the cutting edge to to of the blade is 14-1/2", is the L54 shorter, if so what is the blade height?

The blades are the same. You cannot put a belly blade on a Loboy.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

...except there was a Loboy at the CH 18 show in Dublin, NH back in August with a mid-mount blade. I should have taken some pictures as there were some custom brackets, etc. The blade had also been cut down in height.

I can make it work, just a matter of making the right mounting brackets, found this online:

Agree with Don. That's a Farmall Cub, not a Loboy.

You're not going to find the right brackets because they don't exist. That doesn't preclude you from making them, but you will also have to customize the blade moldboard by cutting it down. With the stock blade you'll get about 2" of lift before it starts hitting the oil pan. Defintely don't want it rubbing on the oil pan; sooner or later it will let all the engine oil out and that's not much fun.

The difference in height between an FCub and a Cub Lo-Boy is approx 6.5 inches so that's how much you would have to cut off the blade.

The picture you posted is not a Loboy. I should have read the complete posting. I see Don beat me to the punch.

I can't wait to see it when you get it done, anything is possible and it's all in how we look at it

I have seen one cut for a Loboy before. That basically cut out for the torque tube.

go cuttin on that blade and you will lose strength and what would be the use for a 6" high blade ? ---IF it hangs so the center could have a cutout in it would make it more useful then reinforce around the cutout area. Whatever you do it wont lift more than 2" off the ground making it pretty useless for getting around. Stick it out front and go!

It's mainly to have an implement on the tractor for shows & putting it on the front makes a trailer space problem!

An angle iron along the to edge adds all the strength needed. And the blade on the JD 112 was more useful than you might think.

I have other tractors for the heavy work.

A center mounted blade is typically used for grading and smoothing. You seldom push a blade full but usually just small amounts of material. A blade, even just 6” tall will do the job quite nicely. I’ve always thought a short blade would work nicely, under a Lowboy. I say, go for it, and show what you come up with.
