Seeking Wisdom - Bent Depth Control Screw

Postby Lance Leitzel » Mon Jan 23, 2006 10:38 am

I hope everybody had a great weekend. I'd like to ask the group for some advice on what I should do about my bent depth control screw.
Here are some pictures to show how bent.

In asking my father-in-law on how to fix this bend, he was advising that I heat it up with a torch and then try to bend it back into shape. Any other suggestions? Currently it does work, but it a real bear in trying to adjust the depth.

Thanks,

Lance

Lance,

It was bent cold and it will straighten cold. If it were in my shop, I'd put it on wooden v-blocks and straighten it under precise control in the press.

Oh I've always wanted a press. :D Any suggestions as to which kind I should consider? Is this something I should consider from Harbor Freight?

lance,
BD gave me advice a while back about using c clamps to break down tires. i forgot that i had large c clamps and now i use them alot. I used three c clamps and two 2x4's on my metal work table to straighten out my tie rods.

Maybe so. The one in my shop is home made... I made it right after I busted my favorite vise trying to do a press job over 30 years ago. I made it narrow so I wouldn't have to worry about strength. I've regretted it many times and would make it wider if I were doing it again.

Lance - I wouldn't go less than 20 ton rating on a press. It's a handy shop addition that one uses more than you would think. I got mine from Harbor Freight. It listed for $199. When I walked into the store, they had them on sale for $169. I wasn't even looking for one when I got it but I couldn't turn it down at that price.

I had to laugh at your statement George about it being to small. I always say to myself, why did I make this dumb thing so wide :D Seems I never have enough room and this press is over 4 foot wide. I should have made mine smaller, for real. Rick

Thanks for the advice about the shop presses. Let's see how my phone call with Harbor Freight will go, "Yeah, I need at least a 20 ton press that's wider than George's but not as wide as Rick's." Should be good for a laugh until my wife opens up the credit card bill.

I do have a question about wooden v-blocks. I've never made them before, so does anybody have any hints?

Thanks,

Lance

Thanks Bigdog. I've been toying between the "A-frame" one and the one you linked to. I've always felt buying from HF is a bit like rolling the dice, so it is nice to talk to someone who has it already.

This is the same one I bought. It was a while back though. It used to list for $199 in the catalog. When I walked into the store and they had them listed for $169, I couldnt resist. No regrets on this one.

Lance,
I can verify that Bigdogs press works very well, used it last year at Cubfest during my tranny rebuild.
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Well, I went to Harbor Freight today, got everything setup this evening and started working on the depth adjusting screw. It started bending back into shape and then without any warning, one loud BAM! Yep, it cracked half way into the screw. Funny thing is that it is straight as an arrow, but cracked enough now that I'm afraid to use it. Going to try putting some JB Weld into the crack and see what happens. Anybody got a lead on a depth adjusting screw for a loboy?
