Okay, started taking the demo apart Sunday. took battery off. lights, etc. didnt click in the brain, until i was driving into work today, the battery was hooked up negative ground, 6 volt system. (Sometimes the mind is a little slow)
Does this mean, i will have to do other modifications to revert it back to positive ground. or did the PO just hook it up backwards?

I am not surewhat the answer is but if you look at these wiring diagrams you should find what you need.

Doc - The only things to look for when you re-connect the system positive ground is first of all, you need to determine that the ammeter is connected correctly so it will indicate charge / discharge conditions right. It may have been switched when the battery was incorrectly connected. This can be checked by watching the ammeter and switching on the lights with the tractor not running. If the ammeter is wired correctly, the needle will indicate a discharge when the lights are turned on. Then you will need to re-polarize the generator so it will charge correctly for a positive ground system. None of the other components will be affected.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Jim, you are correct! If the coil was switched when the battery was installed backwards. (Which I doubt.) In either case Doc, the coil is connected with the + terminal to the points on a positive ground system.
This also assumes that you do not have a magneto ignition.
I believe that most if not all the 6 volt batteries that are connected negative ground are done so simply from someone not knowing the systems should be positive ground. Most younger folks have never seen anything but negative ground systems and assume that all are connected that way.

i'm sure more will be revealed as i dive into the unknown. i am sure i will drive most of the forum NUTS with apparently simple questions, with complicated answers for the mechanically deficienct. patience is a virutre. you all.
i never seen a positive ground till i got me first cub, and actually hooked charger up wrong, and blew ammeter. wont make that mistake again.
