When I start my cub in the winter it starts just fine but it will skip after it is running. I also am wondering if all Farmall cub clutches are Rockford clutches.

Re: starting
Some Clutches were Auburn. A J at the end of the serial number indicates it was a Rockford from the factory, but it could have been changed later.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Is there a year that they started doing Rockfords?

1947. The tractor could come with either brand of clutch. That is why it was marked on the serial tag.
I believe it was common in those days to only replace the clutch disk, so you'd want to know what kind of clutch the tractor had so you could have the disk in stock before you wheeled the tractor in the shop to take it apart. If they were replacing everything like we do now, it wouldn't matter.
I also don't think there was any specific reason why one clutch was installed over the other, other than supply. Most seem to be Rockford. I've had several Cubs pass through my hands and none have had Auburn clutches, though I think I have an Auburn pressure plate from a pile of Cub parts I bought at an auction.

I'm not sure if early serial plates were stamped "J" for clutch type or when it started.

Re: starting
Your engine “skip” could be a bad or malfunctioning spark plug. Could also be related to the coil or parts of the ignition that can be traced to one of the firing circuits.
