I have a 1974 Cub equiped with a one wire alternator, I have had to replace the coil twice in two years each time the coil over heats. I read somewhere that the one wire alternator might be the cause. all help appreciated.

Charles,
It's the fact that it's 12 volt that is at fault. You need to add a resistor to the feed wire to your coil to drop it to 6 volts.

Charles, some coils have internal resistors and some require external resistors. Make sure which one you have and if you need to, add the external resistor. Make sure you are using a 12 volt coil too.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Charles,
The resistor you need is called a "Ballast resistor"
Good Luck,
Brian

You might try looking for a ballast resistor from and old Chrysler product. (pre-electronic ignition 1972 and earlier) Not sure about Fords. GM used a resistor wire.

I have a 6 volt system and have the same problem. My cub got completly submerged in Saltwater during Hurricane Isabel in 2002 and I think its a lingering wiring harness short causing the issue. I've replaced every thing else that is electrical and I do mean everything.

Thanks
I installed a ballast resister with new coil and everthing is working great, mowed grass for 2 hours. Thank you all for the fast response in helping me fix this problem.

Mowing Grass
I woke up to 28 degree Temp. Sat. Morning, I was mowing dead grass that should have been mowed at the end of last cutting season. I hope the grass does not start growing until July, but here in Louisisna we almost cut grass year round

Hey John,
We should insulate our coils to keep 'em warm while plowing snow!
