differential bearings

Postby Steve Hales » Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:15 am

Good Morning, I have a question, yesterday I assembled my trans/diff. and installed the side differential bearings and looked up the torque value . Is that the correct torque? 1 to 8 INCH Pounds? That is hardly mashing the lock washer down, I want to make sure so I won't have to take them apart again. I appreciate all the help I get on this forum.

If you mean the carrier bearings, this page shows them requiring 45 ft. lbs.

Allen is correct. What you quoted was the pulling force required to spin the differential. If memory serves, that is without the pinion shaft installed. The 45ft.#'s are for the bearing cup retainers. Under which the shims go. Does anybody have a reason why those 3 bolts in the retainer cups not eqidistanced apart?? :?

yep, you guys are right, I got ahead of myself again, javascript:emoticon('')I read the rest of the service manual after I made the post. Thanks a lot for the information.
and HR I was wondering the same thing on the bolt pattern, Maybe it is so you get the bearing retainer in the same position as it was when you took it out. I mark one of them left or right. to make sure.

I think the bolt pattern is asymmetrical so the lube hole in the retainer ends up in the correct position.

Good answer Donny. I was just cleaning mine up, removing the bearing race and seal and noticed the angluar lube hole.
