You should be able to mount any rear tires/rims from an older (pre late 1990s) Cub Cadet garden tractor, to the front of your farmall cub. In fact, you would still be able to use your fron wheel weights, since they are the same as the rear weights on Cub Cadets. The all bolt up the same, 5-hole lugs for the rims, and 4-bolt cutouts for the weights.

Didn't I read here somewhere that the earlier Cub's steering geometry caused the front tires to dig in sharp turns, and that the geometry was corrected later on? Or did I dream this??? I know I have to be careful turning with my '55...

Jeff,

You're not dreaming. The flawed steering of the early Lo-Boy was corrected during '58 production.

Numbered series wheels and tires on a cub

Postby Dave Hull » Thu Feb 09, 2006 5:50 am

I have a set of 154 rims on my 47, it makes her set wide, looks kinda of neat. I also have numbered series rear wheels and rims if anyone wants to try, both wide and narrow with diamond type anti-scalping tread.

I think that's who originally asked the question on the tires. Anywho, here's what I have on my spare set of tires for non-marring of the lawn whilst mowing: Tire brand: Winston. They are steel belted radial metric tires, M + S. Size: 155R12 and something else that reads 76S. I copied this off the side of the tires. I have no idea of what it means, just that they look real good on the Cub rims, and I have no trouble with mowing with these tires on the Cub.

The 76S is the service rating. The 2 digit number is the load capacity (76 = 400 kilo or 882 lbs.). The letter is the speed rating (S = 180 km/h or 112 mph).

Those should both be adequate for mowing your lawn.

To rephrase GW's comment, keeping all 4 wheels in contact with the lawn goes a long way towards reducing damage to the lawn surface.

That helps this scattered grey matter upstairs. I would say that both the load capacity and speed capacity of these tires would exceed that of the normal Farmall Cub. 8) That is, unless you have some of Allenlook's "Go Fast" add on's that will cause the rear tires to go up in smoke!

Cornering

Postby allenlook » Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:47 pm

Back when I had Pirelli P-Zero's on the front of the Cub it was OK up to 112mph, and it cornered well, but it didn't do both at the same time while I was mowing, and it tore up the lawn something awful :D

Has already been mentioned, but a guy I know used trailer tires and rims that were fairly inexpensive for his Cub.

Has an interesting locally made reel mower setup too:
