OK guys, heres the problem. I have 3 IH Cub carburetors laying around that I was thinking about throwing away, but decided to soak them a few days and when I removed them, they sure are pretty. The tops are really warped and the idle tubes are broken off. I took the top of one and using Luker Carl's procedure, I straightened it out and it came out perfect. So off to town I went to get a 4-48 tap, idle tubes and a couple of kits. I went to every hardware store around here and couldn't find a 4-48 tap. I found a lot of 4-40 taps. I found some on the Internet, so would one of you open this site and let me know if this 4-48 is the correct tap? Also, what size drill bit would you use. I have every size down to a hairs width. Thanks.

Merlin - that is the tap you need. The tap drill size is a # 42.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Merlin,
I'm having the same problem with broken idle tubes. There are 5 carburetors on the bench right now that I expect to get ready for new idle tubes later this afternoon. The tap drill for 4-48 is a number drill #42, .093" diameter. I would prefer to use a starting tap, since it would be easier to start in the remaining threads, and not between them. The bottoming tap on that site would work, but IMHO wouldn't be the best choice. As far as I can tell, the hole the tube threads into could be tapped deeper if necessary to get a good thread. I plan to use a drill press (turning the spindle by hand) to hold the tap with the manifold flange resting firmly in the table. That will assure the tube comes out square with the world. Along that same line, I used a 1/8" bit to clean out the hole where the tube goes in the lower half. I was surprised how much crap it brought out. Maybe that's what breaks some of the tubes. I had one tube that was stuck so badly in the bowl that I had to drill it out.

Thanks, but I have my doubts if I will ever need them. I'm kind of house bound right now and my wife is bed bound, so I needed something to do. So I brought one inside to tinker with. (Had to put towels down in case she stumbled up)

Thanks. The solution for me is, order a starter and bottom tap. I'll probably break one anyway. But I surprised myself on how well the top came out straight. Had very little filing.
