Belt pulley drive housing leaks
I bought a buzzsaw at Cub-a-rama this fall and am now just getting around to fiddle'n with it. I put oil in it and it leaked. So I took the belt pulley drive shaft oil seal retainer off and replaced the oil seal and made a new gasket. Then I took the drive housing and drive support apart and made a new gasket for it. Put things back together and it didn't leak---for a while. Now in the drive housing support there is a hole on the bottom side about 3/8 to 1/2 inch , there is where the oil is coming from now. I'm assuming it's the oil seal around the pinion sleeve in the drive housing support . My question is I'm not sure how to disassemble it. Looks like I need to take the housing support snap ring off first and that should let the pinion sleeve slide out and make the oil seal accessable. Do you think this oil seal will be hard to find locally ? I'm looking at the Cub server , Cub Parts Manual / Cub Attachments pages 66-68. I'm trying to discribe things as they are in the manual. Hope I'm doing it right. I just want to stop the leaks but I don't want to drive the seal out with out having a new one on hand. And I don't want to pull the snap ring out if that's not the right way to take it apart. Do I take flat bladed screw drivers to pry the snap ring out with? Thanks again, Mike

I haven't had one open, just looking at the diagrams I see this:
1) No gasket between the housing and support. It is sealed with an o-ring and shims are betwen them to adjust the gear mesh. Take your home-made gasket out and put whatever was there back in. If it leaks, replace the o-ring.
2) Current leak probably is the support oil seal.
3) No idea on availability, may need to match by size.
4) Cap screw in end of the drive pinion sleeve holds the pinion on. Removing the pinion and woodruff key required to remove sleeve.
5) You may be able to knock the seal out with a long punch with the sleeve out and the bearing in place. Another possibility is pulling it from the outside with a seal puller or slide hammer.
6) Snap ring holds the bearing, should only need to remove the snap ring if the bearing has to come out to pull the seal.
7) What it takes to remove the snap ring depends on the style ring, so I can't address that.

Thanks Jim, I have taken the homemade gasket off but I left my glasses in the house so I couldn't really check out the seal very well. Will do this tomorrow. I got on Allenlooks site and looked at the manual for belt pulleys and attachments. It looks like there are two oil seals for the pinon shaft. To pull the pinon gear off do I just use a gear puller? I will get my glasses, bring up the manual pages and check things out better tomorrow. Thanks for you help. Mike

Mike, It's been a while since I've taken one apart. Some of reasons they leak may be due to a plugged vent. Those drives should have a pipe plug with a hole drilled through it so that pressure can't build up inside. Some of the shafts have sleeves over them which are sometimes not replaced, leaving a gap. Or the unit could be overfilled. You can get the seal number and Napa will either have it in stock or get in less than a day. I think you need snap ring pliers to remove the rings. If you disassenble the inside, make sure you keep track of the spacers. They must be reinstalled the same way to give you same gear backlash. Larry
