Transmission Bearings and Seals. What do I need to do?

Postby Buzzard Wing » Mon Feb 13, 2006 10:40 am

I have everything I need to put the transmission back together, but before I start is there anything I need to do to the bearings, seals or gaskets ???

I have all the bearings and seals ready to go. I noticed the rear countershaft bearing and race have a light coating of grease.

The manual says to use Hy Tran, since I have it next to the bench I will use it for the o-rings and bearings. Lips on the seals too seems to be a good idea, but I think I will wait until the shafts are going in so they don't get contaminated.

Any words of wisdom???

They kinda put it too far along in the service manual, but the reverse idler gear bushing is supposed to be 'reamed' to between .612 - .613. I noticed a little bit of slop and it seems to be about .610.

It may be a little noisy, but I think I am going to go with it.

Any tips on the PTO bushing?? Can't seem to figure a way to get the old one out except possibly with a tap??

BW - a tap is probably the easiest way to remove the bushing.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks BD. The bushing is staked in, 2 on one side and 1 on the other, but I think a tap will do it!

Let ya know tomorrow.

I hope you have a metric tap. An imperial tap won't work. Either too small to get a grip, or too big for the housing (shaft).

Thanks GW.... guess I could use my calipers to figure the tap size. I think I would look (or at least feel) foolish toting that shaft into the hardware store!?
