Valve spring retaining cup?

Postby Charles (49) Mo » Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:50 pm

Does anyone have an open engine that can measure the diameter of the valve spring retaing cup and the distance from the centerline of the valve stem to the side of the block? Tractor is 80 miles away so I can't measure ours.
TIA

I have on laying on the shop floor. I will measure it up for you tomorrow morning.

So, you are going to build the valve spring compressor? Great.

I have several shop made ones in different sizes that work well. Here's an example:

Cap diameter: .830 inch with calipers. 7/8" eyeball.

Distance from center of valve stem to outside edge of block: 2 1/4".

Distance from end of valve stem to top of block: 3 1/8".

My opinion. Rather than go to the time and expense of building a valve spring compressor that will fit the Cub. Suggest purchasing one with adjustable jaws and adjustable height. I purchased a valve spring compressor from Sears several years ago. Price at that time was $26.00.

You may be able to rent one or get a loaner from the local autoparts store.

Those measurements were just what I needed. Auto parts store had a compressor, but it was about 18" tall. Way too big for my purpose. I'll take the dimensions with me and look around a bit more. If nothing else, at least I can make one.

In the event you don't find another one. If the jaws for the retaining cap on the spring compressor will squeeze down to just over 7/8" then the larger spring compressor will work. You will have to cut a block of wood (2 x 4) to fit (take up the space) between the surface of the block and the shaft where the compression takes place.
